    Berg, said Paul, and smiled as casually as he could. There’s been something I’ve been meaning to ask you. For quite a while.

    Berg’s cup rattled as he lowered it into his saucer. He looked momentarily terrified. But only momentarily. By the time he met Paul’s eyes again, he was smiling. There was more than one reason they called him the Ice Man.

    Go on, he said.

    What’s going on…

    Paul! Brett had turned white, but Paul ignored her.

    What’s going on with you…

    Now Brett had kicked him under the table. Hard. Paul looked down quickly, feigning interest in his breakfast, shovelling in a mouthful of melon, swallowing hard.

    Do you think you might have any, you know, openings? he continued, eventually, all too aware that the spoon he was trying to hold up casually, was shaking in his hand.

    Brett kicked him again, softer this time, but Paul refused to catch her eye. Instead, he watched Berg slowly chew. He waited while he took another sip of coffee. He continued smiling as the larger man honeyed his knife, splodged it on his last piece of croissant and took another mouthful.

    How do you mean? Berg said eventually. He creased his broad forehead into a frown, but his eyes were smiling.

    Well, I mean jobs. For…

    For you?

    I hate to say it.

    That’s okay. But Paul, I… Berg’s frown creases were looking ever smoother.
