    Briggs - Paige Ryland

    One

The day started out just like any other. Truth be told, I'm actually feeling a bit more up than usual. My best friend, Hayley, has fixed me up on a blinddate with a guy she swears is the hottest guy she's ever laid eyes on. I'll have to take her word for it, and hope her vision has improved since the last time she pointed to a guy and said that to me.

Anyway, I'm making a romantic dinner for two, and he's coming over tonight. So I'm looking forward to it, even if I am a bit jittery. I'm hoping for good conversation if nothing else, since it's been a long time since I've been in the company of a man alone. That would have been during my last year of college. I haven't been on a date since I started my current job as personal assistant to the company president, billionaire businessman and owner of Briggson Digital Concepts, nearly a year ago.

When I get to work, my coworker Candy is already there, at her desk, scribbling something on a legal pad. I figure she's working on notes for a report she's putting together for the boss.

When she finally pauses whatever it is she's working on, she looks up and acknowledges my presence. We exchange a couple of words. I try to sneak a peek at what she's doing, but she covers it with her palm.

I shrug to myself and take a seat at my desk, wondering why she's being so secretive. She usually tells me everything, especially if it's something exciting that affects her.

Since she's busy, I decide not to tell her about my weekend plans. Usually she'll try to top my good news with even better news of her own. Once when I was going with a friend to a new club, she claimed she and her boyfriend were going there too and on the same night. What a coincidence! It may have been, but I got the feeling she'd just decided to go when she saw how happy I was to be going to the grand opening of the new club.

Frowning, I glance over at her. Still scribbling away. Maybe she's writing out what she and the boyfriend I've never actually seen are going to do on a weekend. At the club opening, she claimed he was in the mens’ room, where he must have stayed for the rest of the evening.

It occurs to me that she could be working on those notes the boss asked me to prepare, but she doesn't have any files at hand, unless she hid them when she saw me step off the elevator. She can be unpredictable that way sometimes. I learned that recently.

A couple of times each week, Candy and I eat lunch together at the food court in the building, and even though she has bragged that she had a boyfriend-slash-fiance, either boyfriend or fiance, depending on what point she wants to make when we discuss my lack of a long-term
