Dr Jim Porter is a chartered engineer, qualified to a PhD level from London University, with more the 25 years business experience. He has worked for several multinational companies in Europe and the USA. His experience stretches from new products development, project management, new business building, profit and loss responsibility, to the creation of several successful joint ventures and acquisitions.Currently, he is a senior executive, responsible for strategy development and growth initiatives, including partnerships and new businesses building. Dr Porter is particularly interested in business incubation, helping entrepreneurs and start up business owners to achieve their personal and business objectives.Dr Porter is the author of several publications, including a book titled “How to bake your business idea and eat it”, and the creator of “Entrepreneurs Brief Guides” series.Dr Porter is a Fellow Member of several professional organizations and institutions in Europe and the USA. A common perception people hold about leaders is that great leaders are born great, and if you do not have it in you, you can never become a good leader. However, this perception is changing now as more and more people are realizing that with hard work, patience and persistence you can become a highly effective leader.

Usually we come across stories about successful historical personalities who achieved victory through persistence and determination. People who seem to have faced utter disappointments and defeat in their early days and then went onto become the most successful people in the history of the world.
After reading or hearing such stories, we pause for a moment and our thoughts linger on how praiseworthy these born leaders are.
Most of us consider these personalities to be mythological and superhuman and feel that it is not possible for a normal human being to achieve that level of greatness.

How motivated are you to lead?
The basic prerequisite for leadership is the desire to lead. This is simply because becoming an effective leader takes a lot of hard work. If you are not motivated to become a leader or you are not willing to undertake the responsibilities and the hardships of becoming a leader, then you will not make an effective leader.
Therefore, it becomes important to assess how motivated you are to take leadership.
Look at the following statements carefully and put a score next to each statement on a scale of 1–5; 1 = Strongly Agree, 2 = Agree, 3 = Moderate, 4 = Disagree and 5 = Strongly Disagree:
