Adopting anti-procrastination strategies.
Understanding what procrastination is
Procrastination is when you put off important things you should be focusing on at the moment in favour of doing things that are more enjoyable, or you are more comfortable doing.
Putting off an important task for a short period of time due a problem and not delaying it for too long isn’t considered procrastination. If you are simply making excuses to delay your work then that is definitely procrastination.
Procrastination occurs when there’s a significant time period between the intention taken to do a job and when it is actually completed.
Procrastination occurs when there exists a temporal gap between planned behaviour and endorsed behaviour".
People procrastinate every now and then with one or two tasks and this is completely normal. You should adapt anti-procrastination strategies if your habit is causing harm to your credibility.
Overcoming procrastination
Recognizing that you’re procrastinating
The first step is to identify whether or not you are procrastinating. Some useful indicators to self-assess are:
Scheduling your day for low priority tasks, and regularly completing unimportant tasks that others ask you to do.
Ignoring high priority tasks for a long time despite knowing how important they are.
Sitting with the intention of starting but immediately getting up for a cup of coffee or tea.
Making up your mind to start an important task, sitting down and then getting distracted to complete some random activity.
Regularly saying yes
to unimportant tasks.
Re-reading your e-mails while not being able to make up your mind on how to start your job.
Going through your workload again and again, unable to make up your mind about how you will start.
Wasting time waiting for the right mood to start your work.
Why are you procrastinating?
The next step is to figure out why you are procrastinating, as this can depend on either you or the task to be completed.
It is essential to understand which of the two is affecting your situation, so that you can find a suitable solution.
Some reasons why you procrastinate include:
You may be disorganized in your work. Organized people usually maintain prioritized to-do lists and schedules in order to avoid procrastination. They also have a plan of how to start and can easily resume if they have taken a break. Organized people usually break their work into steps so that they can evaluate their progress.
You may be an organized person but might be feeling a little overwhelmed by the task. You could fear success as much as failure, and think that the former may lead to extra tasks beyond your capabilities. If you feel that you aren’t properly skilled to complete the task then deal with this instead of letting it go, as important tasks never get completed on their own.
Sometimes people may find a particular task unpleasant and will try their best to avoid starting it. In this case, the problem can be dealt with by focusing on the enjoyable aspects of the job.
Another major cause of procrastination is having underdeveloped decision making skills, when you simply can’t decide how to proceed with the task.
It is interesting to note that most perfectionists are often procrastinators. They may believe they don’t possess all the skills to complete a task and therefore might not want to start it.
Some other reasons for procrastinating include:
You find the task too difficult.
You don’t have a clear set of goals.
You may find the tasks too confusing.
You may feel that you are not adequately skilled to complete the set of tasks.
Anti-procrastination strategies
The habit of procrastinating cannot be broken overnight; you have to persistently stop yourself from practicing it.
Some tips for avoiding procrastination are:
Start by focusing on one task at a time.
Prepare schedules and maintain a to-do list.
If you really don’t need to get it done at the moment, then avoid adding that task to your to-do list, as it will only make the list
