Chapter 1: Shopping
John always joked and called Rachel low maintenance, a label that she was particularly proud of. She would hate to be thought of as demanding or someone who needed constant attention; she was independent, strong willed and knew exactly what she wanted.
Similarly, Rachel would never describe herself as masculine or as a tomboy, attributes normally associated with low maintenance, and nor would anyone else. But she did always consider her outlook different to many of her friends. They loved getting dressed up for a girls night out or going to pamper parties, and while Rachel was happy tagging along, she was equally comfortable drinking pints in a pub or playing pool with the boys.
Another difference along the same lines was her attitude to holiday packing. Unlike her friends, who diligently piled clothes on their spare beds a week before they were set to leave, Rachel would simply run around the house a couple of hours before the taxi was due and scoop whatever she needed off the radiators and fold them into her suitcase.
That morning, she looked down at her case and decided something was missing. She couldn’t decide what it was, everything looked like it was packed, and she’d gone through her mental list checking things off, but she calculated that something extra was needed.
Determined to resolve the issue, she dragged John out of bed and drove him, still grumbling, into the town’s shopping district. They’d reached the shops as they were opening so she was able to quickly whizz around the deserted aisles picking things up that she didn’t even realise she needed: another set of sunglasses, a sun hat, a bikini and a few other odds and ends. They were just heading home when she pulled John into a clothes store.
‘What do you think?’ Rachel asked, holding a white cotton dress against her body. She knew he would answer truthfully; he’d been trained over many shopping trips to mask his indifference.
‘Nice,’ John nodded, ‘it suits you.’ He glanced around the store. They were the only customers still and even most of the staff were just milling around, chatting and drinking coffee.
‘It does feel nice,’ Rachel admitted. She frowned as she held it high, twirling it about to see how the material flowed. ‘I think it looks too much like my other white one, the one I bought in Ed’s shop.’ Her stomach tightened as her mind drifted back to the changing room where she had tried on that dress. She thought about that day often, always fondly and always with a naughty smile on her lips.
‘You could always keep it as a spare,’ John suggested, yanking her out of her thoughts, ‘it would save worrying about laundry whilst we’re away.’
‘True,’ she agreed, ‘but realistically, would we really wash clothes on holiday?’ Her thoughts drifted back to the changing room. ‘We must arrange something with Ed and Jenn when we get back. It seems ages since we’ve seen them.’
‘Yeah, it does,’ John said. They’d seen each other a couple of times since her birthday but it had been a few weeks since they’d last met for drinks. A sexual tension always lingered just beneath the surface when they were together, plenty of flirting, loads of suggestion and the occasional amorous touch. They hadn’t repeated the activities of that evening but the promise of it was always there, never far out of reach. ‘I’ll text Ed. He mentioned having a pint one lunchtime. I’ll sort it out with him then.’ He looked at Rachel and raised his eyebrows enquiringly. ‘Want a night in or meet up in town?’
Rachel placed her hand on John’s arm and fluttered her eye lashes in mock seduction. ‘Can we stay in? Please? I can cook something, and we can see what happens.’ She leaned forward, kissed him on the cheek then whispered into his ear, ‘I’ve been having thoughts about Jenn recently, naughty thoughts. I want to, you know, do that again. Can I?’
John dropped the shopping bags on the floors and gave her a gentle kiss on the lips. He wrapped his arms around her, being careful not to squash the dress. ‘Mmm, of course you can. I’m pleased. Well, pleased you enjoyed that night as much as you did. It would be fun to do it again, wouldn’t it?’
At that moment, one of the young shop assistants strolled past and smiled at John. He smiled back, scanning her with his eyes as she placed some clothes onto a rack a few yards away. His eyes lingered on her slender legs which were barely covered by a skirt inappropriately short for so early in the day.
‘Hey, less of that,’ Rachel said, catching his glance. She slapped him playfully on the arm and pushed him away, breaking their embrace.
The shop assistant heard and laughed. ‘You guys are in early. You must be retail addicts to be shopping at this time on a Saturday!’
‘No,’ Rachel smiled, ‘we’re flying on holiday this afternoon. We’re just getting those last few items.’
‘One of those items will need to be a larger suitcase if you keep buying stuff at this rate,’ John remarked.
‘Ooo, I’m so jealous,’ the shop assistant groaned, ‘I’d love to be going away. I haven’t got another holiday until Christmas.’
‘That’s got to be tough,’ John agreed. He pointed to his watch and then at the dress that Rachel was inspecting. ‘Are we getting this? We need to be heading off soon. Make a decision, woman.’
Rachel held it up and spun it around a few more times. ‘It is lovely, isn’t it? But I’m not sure. I’ve pretty much spent the money I came out with.’ She held the dress back against her chest. ‘It feels so soft, I love it. But it is like that other dress.’ John tapped his foot. ‘Don’t rush me,’ she grinned. She turned it around a few more times, then quickly thrust it towards the sales assistant. ‘Take it away from me, please!’
The sales assistant took it and smoothed it down with the back of her hand. ‘Well, it’s only just in so it’ll be here for a few more weeks should you change your mind.’ She strode off towards the rack. ‘Enjoy your holiday,’ she called back.
‘We will!’ John replied, sneaking a final look her at legs. ‘C’mon, let’s get going.’ He took Rachel’s hand and led her out of the shop.
They walked back in the direction of the car, with John tugging Rachel along whenever she slowed to look at a window display. Once they were out of the main pedestrianised area the shops became smaller, the large chain stores making way for the smaller independents. The shops became visibly cheaper and more amateur the further they walked: posters in the windows were handwritten and several of the lights in the hoardings were left broken, giving the appearance of curious anagrams.
As they turned a corner, John noticed an adult sex shop across the road. He frowned. ‘I haven’t seen that shop before, is it new?
‘I’ve no idea. I haven’t been along this road for years. It doesn’t look new.’ The inside of the shop was concealed by a large black sheet spanning the entire window. Randomly placed in front of it were a few clichéd outfits, like a French maid’s and a police women’s, and a selection of tacky whips and handcuffs that looked like they would break on their first use. The paint on the wall was peeling and the objects on display were so sun-bleached that they must have been there for ages.
‘What do you think?’
‘What do I think about what?’
‘You know what,’ John replied, gently squeezing her hand. ‘Maybe see if we can get something to spice up our holiday.’
Rachel screwed up her nose. ‘In there? It looks seedy. I bet the floor is sticky and horrible.’
‘Maybe, we could take a quick peak.’
‘It’s probably full of dirty old men in long macs.’
‘Well, it could be dirty old men and a young couple bogged down with shopping bags,’ John laughed.
‘I bet I’d be the first woman ever to step in there.’ She paused and noticed John’s puppy-dog face. ‘You want to do, don’t you?’ John nodded. ‘It is pretty naughty, isn’t it? I’ve still got twenty quid to spend.’
John looked at the window display. ‘You could buy something like that,’ he suggested, pointing to a maids outfit.
‘You’ve got to joking! It looks like it’s made from plastic. It’ll slice me to shreds,’ Rachel gasped.
‘Got to admit, it does look pretty uncomfortable. Still, it’ll be easy to clean.’
‘Easier than your dirty mind,’ Rachel laughed. ‘OK, let’s do it. Before I change my mind.’
They crossed the street and headed towards the door. Rachel gave a final look around to make sure she didn’t recognise anyone then darted into the shop.
Chapter 2: Lisa
Once inside, Rachel was pleasantly surprised. The shop was brightly lit and tastefully decorated, and much to her pleasure, there wasn’t a single mac in sight. In fact, the shop was completely empty, no-one was even behind the till.
Facing them on the back wall was a selection of cheap looking outfits similar to those they saw in the window and to the left was the empty counter and till. Covering the right wall, from floor to ceiling, were magazines and DVDs. Rachel chuckled at the thought of all the ‘top shelf mags’ filling all the shelves! The aisle stand and the left wall looked more interesting; they contained various toys that Rachel didn’t even recognise.
‘Wow,’ John exclaimed, nodding towards a display panel beside the door they’d just come through, ‘that’s an impressive vibrator collection. I bet you could mix cement with a few of those.’
Rachel pointed to a particularly fierce looking one that wouldn’t have been out of place on a medieval battlefield. ‘That’s making my eyes water just looking at it!’
‘It would make a donkey feel inadequate,’ John laughed. ‘That’s got to be designed for women who’ve had a couple of kids.’
‘Hey! It better not be, that might be me one day!’ Rachel exclaimed.
A woman slowly emerged from behind a curtain on the other side of the counter. She tucked a stray piece of her sun-bleached hair behind her ear. She looked up and noticed Rachel and John staring back. ‘I’m so sorry,’ she apologised, ‘I didn’t hear the door. I was out back unpacking a delivery.’
Like the shop itself, the woman wasn’t at all what Rachel was expecting. She was pretty, smartly dressed and in her early twenties. Rachel was expecting either a seedy old man or if it was a woman, some slutty old tart with a cigarette dangling out her mouth. This wasn’t what she’d thought a sex shop would be like.
‘Don’t worry, we’re just browsing,’ Rachel said, following John towards the side wall. Rachel kept a curious eye on the woman, who noticing some muck on her hands from the boxes she’d been unpacking rubbed them together until they were clean.
She glanced up and noticed Rachel and John looking a little lost in the shop. ‘Are you guys looking for anything in particular?’ she asked, leaning over the counter. Her face had a constant smile, genuine and curious, in that youthfully enthusiastic way.
‘This is my first time in … one of these shops,’ Rachel confessed, still not comfortable being in there. ‘I don’t even know what half these things are!’
‘Buy them all,’ she laughed, ‘I can guarantee you’ll have lots of fun finding out what they do.’
‘I think the customs people would have a shock if they opened the luggage!’ John said.
‘Shove it in the hold, no embarrassment then,’ the woman suggested. ‘My boyfriend and I went to Spain at the end of the last semester. I think we drained their national grid charging the toys we took.’ She had a dreamy expression on her face.
Rachel looked at her. From what the woman said, and how she said it in her well bred Home Counties accent, she was probably a student at the university, just working here for some extra cash. She had that gorgeous olive skin that clearly hadn’t been weathered by too many winters, and had enjoyed long lazy summers. And by the look in her eye, she was obviously fondly remembering that holiday.
‘We’re going on holiday ourselves, this afternoon,’ Rachel admitted. She felt a little sheepish. She wanted to ask about those toys but felt silly and naive asking a much younger woman who also happened to be a complete stranger, which ones she and her boyfriend had enjoyed so much. An image flashed before her of the woman naked, straddling her boyfriend, tying him to the bed.
