My Sister’s Wrath - Michelle Mackenzie

    Chapter 1

Ialways liked watching the women walk past my window; so sure of themselves and what they wear. I envied them: The way they walk and hold their postures, brimming with confidence. Then there’s me, fumbling clumsily over my words just trying to say hello. It was pathetic. Of course, I constantly try to adapt to my surroundings, but lately, I had been finding, the harder I try to fit in, the more I am pushed aside.

Then there’s Erika. She’s older, sophisticated and popular. Though, she treats me like dirt around other people, but she’s kind to me when we’re alone. So, she must like me, right? I’m constantly being warned that she was bad news. There were rumours that she gossips and lies, degrading people that displeases her. I try not to do that. She’s also the only girl that even notices that I exist. None of the other girls give me the time of day. I should have took that as a sign, but I just wanted to be noticed. I just wanted a woman to love me for the way I am. Awkward, erratic on occasion, but desperately try to make people happy. Instead, I was blinded to the walking red flag. I guess I have a type; Especially since this wasn’t the only time I was betrayed. Back then, I fumbled on, trying to get myself out of my mess. But I learned, sometimes it doesn’t hurt to ask for a little help.

When shit hit the fans, I really had no choice. I had to make a call, and it was all because I made the decision to keep my dignity. Perhaps it was a mistake on my part because I had no idea things would go so far. It wasn’t all bad though... I got my sister home, and I know she’s watching my back.

But, let me start from the beginning. My name is Ronan Splice, and this is a story about how Kiera saved my life.

It all happened on a cold Monday afternoon. I often thought it a cruel joke as if Mondays weren’t bad enough. I was hanging outside one of the grocery stores that I volunteered in with a group of friends. They were older than me by at least five years and was into everything that I was not. They smoked pot, took random pills and drank like a fish. On the other hand, I smoke regular cigarettes, only drink a beer on the weekends, and as for the pills—even a paracetamol makes me gag. So, why did I hang with them? That was easy. Convenience. They were always hanging around outside, so I hung with them during my breaks.

I had just finished snuffing out my cigarette on the side of the brick wall, when a tall woman approached me. I had seen her a few times before, usually around five and would always ask for a light. I never caught her name but giving her a hand lighting her cigarette almost became a routine.

On this day, however, she was early. She was wearing a long red dress, black high-heeled shoes, and a black leather jacket. Her tiny frame looked fragile and bony, and her face was gaunt. I suspected that she hadn’t been feeling well, and the change in her appearance was staggeringly noticeable—and not in a good way. I daren’t say anything, that would be rude.

There’s my knight in shining armour! she sang, greeting me. My friends hung back at the shop, opening a can of beer each.

Afternoon. Need your usual? I asked, sparking a small flame from my lighter.

Please. I’m meeting a few friends later, she told me. She didn’t offer names or places; it was none of my business.

Maybe I’ll see you about, I smiled. I’m Ronan, by the way.

Erika, she returned, smiling. Probably won’t be seeing me though. They’re not local.

    I
