I wanted to give a thank you to my mentor and fellow author Marsha Ward for her guidance and assistance in helping me become an author. She has been very patient with me throughout the whole process and my many questions.
I also wanted to thank my family and friends who have supported me all these years to help me see my dream come true, even when they had to listen to some bad story ideas or the same story over and over.

Chapter 1
I sat on the front porch of my parents’ home in New York watching the horses, buggies and people hurry by. I didn’t like the noise and cramped feel of the city, but I would put up with it for a few days to see my folks, mostly my ma. I didn’t get along with my pa very well due to our difference in opinion on what was considered an acceptable profession for me.
My pa, Sebastian Edwards, was a shipping merchant and had several ships that sailed from America, England, and Spain. He had wanted me to work with him in the family business, but I didn’t want to wear some tight suit all the time and deal with snobby rich folks.
My ma, Emilia Edwards, was from Spain. Pa met her on one of his trips over there and brought her back with him. Pa’s ancestors had been in the Americas for several generations. Pa was named after one of the first ones to have come over. That ancestor had been a pirate back in their glory days when pirates ruled the seas. They say he even married a siren. I wasn’t sure if that was true or not.
The family has since turned to the more legal side of obtaining and selling merchandise. Being a merchant wasn’t the life for me though. I always liked the stories of the west, so I learned how to use a six shooter and a rifle. When I was eighteen, I bought a twin set of ivory handled Colt pistols and a Winchester 44 rifle. I set out west to see what it was all about. I went by train and horseback and worked my way out to California. I didn’t like trouble and just wanted to explore, but trouble seemed to find me.
At one point I was traveling through Oklahoma territory and stopped at a saloon. I ordered a drink and was sitting enjoying it when a trigger-happy fellow about my own age decided to start trying to rile me up. I had just ignored him, but the fellow wouldn’t give up. Even the bartender had told him to back off. The guy had just ignored the bartender though. By that time, everyone in the saloon was watching.
I bet you don’t even know how to use those guns,
the fellow said.
I still didn’t say anything.
I said, I don’t think you know how to use those guns,
he repeated.
I sighed and scratched at the stubble on my jaw. Look, I don’t know who you are or what you feel you need to prove, but I have covered a lot of territory and am just trying to relax for a spell. Why don’t you sit, and I’ll buy you a drink?
You don’t know who I am?
Seeing how I just rode into town, no I don’t know who you are. I also don’t care. So, either sit down and I’ll buy you a drink or get out of my space.
The bartender spoke up again, Daniel, I’d sit down and leave the man alone.
Daniel just laughed and looked at me. "Why don’t we just settle this
