    Chapter 1 – The Harbour

Protected by a high sea wall since medieval times, the harbour was the hub of the old town and hadn’t aged for centuries. Only now, merchant ships and fishing boats had been replaced by speed boats and luxury yachts. Bustling tapas bars and art galleries lined the edge of the dock where once sailor’s pubs and trading stores stood.

She climbed the stone steps, chipped and weathered by countless winters, and wandered along the sea wall, pulling her jacket tight across her chest. The bar she’d left had been crowded and stuffy, groups of drunken tourists competing to be the loudest.

Her friends had staggered on, searching for their next drink. She’d held back, needing some time to herself. When she’d spotted the steps, she veered away without anyone noticing.

The sound of revelry could be heard from behind. With each step, the jarring shrieks diminished, replaced by the soothing sound of the waves breaking along the wall. Only the crest of the waves, white streaks tumbling over themselves, broke the blackness of the sea.

Her senses, numbed by the claustrophobic melee of the bars, gradually returned. She had needed the freshness of the evening air, the ancient smell of the sea, to catch her thoughts and compose herself.

All night, while her friends joked and shared intimacies, the stool beside her was either empty of contained the wrong person. The smile she wanted directed at her, the hand she wanted to hold, the lips she wanted to kiss, was never there. Sometimes he sat near, sometimes opposite, but his attention rarely focussed on her.

During the trip, she often felt like an intruder, never part of the group. Both of them, him and her, had been asked along to make up the numbers, they hadn’t met before. When the couples leaned into each other, their shoulders supporting the other, or when their cheeks were tenderly kissed as the partner went to the bar, she had felt very much alone.

All she had wanted was someone to embrace, someone to kiss. But he was never beside her. Instead, there he was, across the table, laughing with somebody else.

Other couples strolled aimlessly along the pathway, talking quietly or just comfortable in their silence. The autumn air, not too cool to spoil the romantic moment, gave them an excuse to embrace, arms wrapped tightly around the other.

She gazed across the empty sea. The boats were safely moored within the harbour walls. The only sounds coming from the vast space in front of her were the distant chimes of the bells tied to the buoys.

She leant over the wall and looked down. The tide was high, the ocean smell strong. The laughter from the bars carried on the wind, though far quieter now she’d strolled further along the wall. She enjoyed the solitude, but realised she should be getting back, her friends would be getting worried after her unannounced departure.

As she turned to go, two hands slid around her waist. Strong fingers caressed her stomach, pinning her arms. Panic boiled insider her. She gasped, readying to scream, poised to run. Before she could react, his head lowered, his lips grazing her neck.

A soft voice, barely perceptible over the wind, whispered, ‘I came to find you.’

His breath hit her ear, dispersing her panic, generating warmth throughout her body. She recognised the accent, the lilt of his voice, a voice she had heard laughing only minutes before.

The hands gripped her waist, pulling her tight, embracing her fully. Her body relaxed and fell back against his chest. His chin nuzzled her hair as they stood calmly looking out to sea, knowing that no other words need be said, both content in their silence.

Couples drifted past, strolling to the end of the sea wall
