    About the Author

What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.

    -Crowfoot, Blackfoot warrior and orator

    Introduction

I awoke before dawn one morning with the words imperfect gods in my mind. The imperfect gods came from nowhere like the remnants of a dream that I couldn’t remember. The idea deeply touched me. This idea is that we are gods. We are flawed with human imperfections and physical mortality. But we are gods, human gods. God gives humanity life. We are born with God in our souls. We are imperfect gods.

My intent wasn’t to write a book. I wanted to explore my thoughts on God, religion, and life as I understood and imagined them. I allowed the imperfect gods to lead me. They wanted me to say something. The beliefs I express in this book come from inside me and outside me. Perhaps they come from so deeply inside that they only appear to be outside.

From what part of you do these ideas originate? What is deeply inside you and outside you?

You, God. These ideas come from you that is in all life. I should warn the readers. God sometimes takes over writing this book. I can’t do much about it. I have to accept it.

You can’t do anything about it. Now get back to the introduction.

See what I mean. My words are in plain text. God's words are in italics. My one qualification to write this book is my innate holiness. I am neither a religious fanatic nor am I unique. I am the same as everyone. I am a simple person who accepted the holiness of life. All human beings are the same. We are born holy and our bodies die. We pass the time between physical birth and physical death in ignorance. We are ignorant of the God that lives inside us. We are ignorant of heaven in our physical lives.

I give the reader an ordinary person’s re-imagination of God, religion, and life. This book is not a self-help manual. You will not find a magical code that promises a life of success or guaranteed happiness. There is no such thing. I quote scriptures and secular writings but that doesn’t suggest that what I say is true for you. What I believe is the truth but it is my truth. Some of you will not accept it as your truth. What we know about God and soul can’t be proved or disproved. It is truth beyond words and thought.

I hope this book dispels the lies that God and heaven are separate from us and attainable only upon our physical death. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Where you go or what you do with these ideas is your choice. I pray that it takes you to your true self. Your true self is God.

God is seated in the hearts of all.

    -Bhagavad Gita

If you talk to God, you are praying; if God talks to you, you have schizophrenia.

    -Thomas Szaz

God speaks to me but not with words. It’s not like we sit at the kitchen table over coffee and donuts but that is how I represent it in this book. It’s the most readable way to share my ideas. This is one long talk but I divided it into six chapters for easier reading. God talks to everyone. Most of us do not or will not listen.
