The Adventure of Being Human II - Jerry Lane

    Publisher’s Preface

We have two chief purposes for publishing The Adventure of Being Human series, this book being the second volume so far in print. The first is to amplify the core spiritual teachings of The Urantia Book, a challenging and unprecedented revelatory text first published in 1955. The second is to introduce the two central deity-personalities of the Urantia Revelation, affectionately known to us as Mother Spirit (or simply Mother) and Christ Michael (or Michael). The figure of Michael as he is depicted in the Urantia Revelation is known to history as the human Jesus Christ. The person of Mother has made her appearance to us as the divine Mother of almost every world religion, known by such names as Mother Mary (Christianity), Shakti (Hinduism) or Kuan Yin (Taoism). As taught in the Urantia text, Michael and Mother are our universe parents—in fact, Mother is the heavenly consort and the equal deity-partner of Michael. The Urantia Book reveals that the divine figure of Christ has a coequal feminine complement—and we are the evolving children of this sublimely beautiful divine couple.

Technically speaking, this exalted pair are our local universe parents in that they are the creators of our local universe (i.e., the local section of our Milky Way galaxy) of several million inhabited worlds—one of which is our planet, Urantia. (A more detailed discussion of this theology and cosmology is provided in Appendix B.) Being the creators and upholders of their local universe and all of its living beings, Michael and Mother also maintain, by virtue of their divine omniscience, loving and intimate contact with their sons and daughters—you and I. This love and watchcare is reflected in their directly transmitted teachings about soulful living as recorded in the first two volumes of The Adventure of Being Human series.

What, then, is the Urantia Revelation? Purported to be a modern revelation to humankind, The Urantia Book comes across at first glance as a two-thousand-page futuristic encyclopedia of spirituality, history, philosophy, science, and religion. Indeed, for thousands of people worldwide, it has become an indispensable philosophic and cosmic reference text. But most of us love the Urantia revelation for another reason: its profound teachings on spiritual living. Followers of Jesus are especially attracted by the book’s seven-hundred page narration of his life and its deeper and more philosophical presentation of his gospel. In addition, teachings spread out among the book’s 2,096 pages greatly augment our understanding of ethics, health, happiness, love, service, forgiveness, mercy, friendship, marriage, and spirituality—topics that we believe Mother further discusses with elegance in this book.

Among many other teachings, the Urantia Revelation provides a greatly expanded understanding of our human adventure on this planet, and in fact provides a novel definition of what it means to be human against the backdrop of its vastly expanded cosmology. The Adventure of Being Human series is designed to be a friendly, warm, and interactive extension of this same quest for a better understanding of our humanity. After all, what better way to appreciate ourselves than from the standpoint of the very divine beings who created us? This book purports to provide teachings about being human, offered directly from their cosmic point of view, inclusive of Christ Michael’s experience of living on Earth as one of us.

Welcome, then, to the best lessons and most memorable passages from a long series of phenomenal transmissions from, in this case Mother Spirit—a delightful and highly personal divine being and co-creator of our local universe with its trillions of personal beings. In so doing, this book presents a new kind of anthropology of humankind and a novel guide to daily living on our unique planet. We’ve picked the best of these live sessions, which usually alternated each week between Michael and Mother Spirit.

Another mission of this book is to introduce the unique Urantian cosmology as well as the new revelatory phenomenon known as the Teaching Mission, of which our work is a small part. This unique celestial mission offers a vast amount of transmitted teachings that are based on and supplemental to The Urantia Book, transcribed materials similar in content and format to the teachings published in this volume. (The so-called Teaching Mission transcripts, over 5,000 in number and running into 30,000 total pages, are accessible at archival sites online—see Appendix D). In addition, the last section of this book provides transmissions related to the important extension of the Teaching Mission known as the Magisterial Mission,* which is introduced in more detail in Appendix C.

Finally, we provide a personal prologue by the transmitter-receiver of these unique teachings, Jerry Lane of Mill Valley, California. These transmissions have taken place in public sessions held in Jerry’s living room for many years, and still continue. (The entirety of raw transcripts of these transmissions is available online, as explained in Appendix D.) Please note also that a glossary of terms and other background material is provided at the end of this volume. All that said, we hope you enjoy the new teachings that follow and Jerry and I pray that they enhance the soulfulness of your human adventure.

    Prologue

    by Jerry Lane

This book is the second in a series of lessons about the adventure of being human on this planet. These selected lessons are presented by our spiritual parents, and in this volume we feature our Mother Spirit. She and her divine consort, Christ Michael, are introduced in the Publisher’s Preface and also in Appendix B.

But why is being human such an adventure? In this book Mother Spirit points out that—unlike material reality—much of our human reality is not subject to antecedent causation; it’s not directly caused by the facts and events of our immediate past. Our experience is always partly transcendent to what has just transpired. The endless and somewhat unfathomable adventure that results from this condition is the way God deliberately chooses to raise his universe children. We are involved in, and part of, his gigantic, ever-evolving universe reality that is far, far beyond our imaginations—and yet it is possible to discover, as we must do, real facts and truths about universe realities. Our discoveries are made possible because God chooses to share his creative spirit with us in the form of free-will choice. We have an ability to create, right out of ourselves, some new alternative to what is handed to us each evolving moment. We can make decisions with a freedom of thought and action that is always unique to us and our situation.

In other words, we can choose to creatively accept the challenge of meeting our as-yet-unknowable adventures of life; or, we may all-too-simply just react to our immediate world, always a moment or two behind the curve. In either case, here comes the next adventure, wrapped up in time and tomorrow! At times we may face a desperate need to exercise all our creative abilities just to embrace, understand, and handle unforeseen events, good or bad. In positively acting—hopefully by way of our own creative, highly conscious choices—we discover within ourselves our own gifts of God’s creative nature, which he shares with us.

Mother Spirit lovingly calls us creatures because we are deliberately created as beings of free-will dignity. We are more than highly intelligent animals. We are something else entirely. We are endowed with a unique personality and, if we choose to use it, creative prerogatives that gives us a measure of freedom far beyond our animal cousins. It’s always and forever up to us—and isn’t this one meaning of freedom?

Mother Spirit even has another way of expressing this profound truth: we are constantly co-creating our own reality, and it is important that we realize it. And so she lovingly teases us by offering these lessons as our Owner’s Manual for Human Beings so we can check out all the parts of our divine design.

Again, we are each a unique personality endowed with creative free will. We are recognizing or even creating the very alternatives that give us the possibility of choice upon which our freedom relies. At least this is the way our Mother Spirit sees us, and helps us to see ourselves and each other.

But, you may ask, what order of personal being is she? Who is our Mother Spirit as she comes across to us in these pages, and in those of The Urantia Book?

Most surprisingly, she is actually a part of us. Or maybe this is not so surprising, since her living presence that is available all around us, and within us, has been recognized since the dawn of the human race. Primitive men and women knew her presence as Life Itself, the Great Spirit animating all living things. Christianity knows her presence as the Holy Spirit. During our primitive childhood here on earth, it dawns on us too that there is something immense and ungraspable both within and surrounding us: our hearts that are pounding and the great green living trees that are tossing in the wind—as if all the world, even the stones and the stars, were alive. We are alive, in her.

This is our Mother Spirit, for she teaches that she belongs to us, her children, as much as we are hers. She was and continuously is the creator and sustainer of life on our planet. She directed evolution from the earliest living one-celled plants, and then on to animals, and finally arriving at us—over billions of years of time.

In addition, here and now she provides a spiritual dimension within our waking consciousness, if you will, that makes us super-minded and fully human. Her lessons herein help us recognize the true nature of our minds, to which she gives a systematic boost. For our very consciousness at this moment exists within her omnipresence, and is augmented by her presence within us. She does not give us direct, discrete ideas, but rather she supplies an extra scope and clarity to all the dimensions of our experiencing, sensing, and reasoning.

The dimensions of her consciousness that are available to us are what the Urantia text calls her adjutant mind-spirits*—of which there are seven. Through these inherent endowments of our minds, she profoundly influences both our mentality and our creative spirit. She helps us consciously register our most basic perceptions and experiences of life, our direct intuition, which is the first of the mind-spirits. She assists in our ability to store our experiences as knowledge, allowing us to truly know things because we’ve experienced them. As a result there are all the hundreds of ways we sort and categorize and remember our experience—our understanding of what follows what, and how things are related in time and space. Another of our seven Mother Spirit endowments is our courage, our determination to do the difficult or dangerous thing, if needed, to extend ourselves into the unknown and embrace it. Our gregariousness, our delight in sharing our lives and counseling with each other, is yet another of these mind-spirits. These five endowments—known as her gifts of intuition, knowledge, understanding, courage, and counsel—we share with the higher animals. But two additional adjutant mind-spirits—known as worship and wisdom— are unique to us as humans and distinguish us as such.

Mother Spirit teaches that the mind endowment of worship is the total summation of all our feelings of appreciation, our thankfulness and love for God’s gift of life itself and for all the other folks our lives have beheld. These feelings of gratitude can be focused and directed in worship toward our Father, the single unique, absolute, infinite and eternal personal being, from whose creativity we derive our own unique being. We are each a personal, living, free-willed creation of his dynamic love and watch care. Recognizing this, and treasuring it, is worship.

Wisdom, the seventh and final of the mind endowments granted us from Mother Spirit, refers to our ability to utilize the six lower dimensions of our mind and spirit, and bring to bear all our past experiences of life, in order to skillfully handle the present moment. Acknowledging in all humility that we can never have too much hard-earned wisdom, we thank our Mother Spirit for augmenting this facet of our thinking above all, especially those times when our wisdom helps us survive.

Although it is not at all necessary to read The Urantia Book in order to understand and enjoy Mother Spirit’s lessons, whole chapters on her reality and activities can be found throughout its 2000-page journey around the universe. They include many pages on the other spiritual influences we have within us. In addition to Mother Spirit’s Holy Spirit, there is her companion’s—Christ Michael’s—Spirit of Truth. His Spirit gives us orientation and offers a friendly, enticing nudge within us to courageously seek, with open minds and hearts, the greatest encompassing of truth in any situation. Surpassing even these spiritual influences is an indwelling, individualized presence of God, recognized in many religions as the small still voice within that ever guides us toward, and helps us recognize, truth, beauty, and goodness. So Mother Spirit is definitely in good company; and these gifts are, all three, wonderful inner company for you and I.

Are you now feeling a little crowded inside, as well as overly complicated, with a body, a mind, seven mind-spirits, a soul, and indwelling spirit, and a free-will personality? It’s understandable. This is one prime purpose of Mother Spirit’s contacting us through these lessons. She wants to let us know that, in our need to unify ourselves within and without, and not be scattered, we are each not only unique, but nigh universal as well. She calls it the 200 percent-ness of life. All people, starting in their earliest childhood, experience being pulled in many directions
