    Chapter I - CODE NAME R.A.E.

Rae looked around carefully as he headed toward the old chicken coop, his favourite little workshop. He carried a burlap bag in his hand as he glanced about him to make sure that no one was following him. Rae at 14 was a pleasant faced boy that tended to be over-weight. He was, in spite of the extra weight, extremely active and wiry. His chubby appearance hid his hyperactivity. He had tousled brown hair and piercing blue eyes.

In spite of his caution he was unaware that a young boy was watching him as he approached the old shed. The watcher was a boy of ten, short and stubby, with crew cut and dressed in faded blue overalls.

Rae approached the door of the shed and while looking in all directions he still failed to notice Donnie hiding behind a large bush. He reached the chicken house and carefully released the catch that allowed him to open the door. It was a device that he had created which made it impossible for anyone not understanding the action to enter the shed. Just as he opened the door he heard a voice, Hey, Rae, whatcha doin'?

Oh no, it was the little leach from next door. It seemed wherever he went that kid followed him. He wondered how Donnie kept track of him.

Hey Rae can I come in and see all your fun stuff? Come on I won't tell anyone about it. I won't even tell them about those firecrackers you took in there yesterday. I don't think your folks would be happy with you havin' them.

Sounds to me like blackmail Dodo. You wouldn't try that on me would ya? Rae poked Donnie on the arm as he good-naturedly let him know that there was no threat taken or seriously acknowledged. You know Donnie if you start threatening me I'll have to cut you off from our parties here. I did promise that I'd teach you some computer stuff, but not if you are gonna be a snitch. Rae shrugged his shoulders and held the door open as ten-year-old Donnie stepped into the coop. Then he closed the door and set the bolt.

Carefully he set his package down and drew back the curtain that covered the white frosted window. Now the room was lighter, but because of the frosted glass, one of Rae's inventions that he had created with a chemical he mixed, no one could see in the window.

Donnie started to dig in the parcel that Rae had carried. It was wrapped in burlap. He pulled back the cover and stared at the large plastic tube. Wow what's this thing Rae? Where do ya get all this crazy stuff?

Now look punk, you're in here but remember you promised me that you'd keep your mouth shut about this place. So keep your ugly little trap shut.

Hey Rae, don't get hot, you know I won't talk. I been watchin' this place for a long time. If anyone even went near it when you're not here I'd make sure that they got scared off good. I don't want to tell anyone, I just want to watch you work at all that neat stuff you got here.

"You won't get to see a lot of it today. I got to move quite a bit of it around because I'll be bringin' some new stuff in and if you help me first by keepin' an eye on this place when I'm not around you'll get to see the new stuff. Just remember don't ask a lot of questions, don't touch stuff that you can break, and most
