    Bad Moon Rising

    The four wheel drive crunched over rocks as it approached a clearing, its black duco smeared with a fine coat of dust. The forest opened up into a flat, grassy area by the banks of a small creek. When the car skidded to a stop in the centre of the clearing, four people in their late teens jumped out and took in the surrounds.

    Pete Matthews and his younger sister, Caitlin, were first to alight and immediately went over to the edge of the creek. It was only about twenty feet across and not very deep. Pete ran his eyes over the cool, clear water and watched as it bubbled over rocks on its journey through the valley.

    Hey, this is a great spot, Robbie.

    Pete turned to see his friends, Jeff Rudd and Robbie Taylor, coming towards them.

    Jeff did a pirouette as he walked. Your uncle must be rich to own all this property.

    He is, Robbie replied and removed a pair of dark sunglasses from his eyes. He doesn’t like to share any of it though.

    Bit tight, is he?

    Extremely.

    Does he know we’re on his property? asked Caitlin. He shoulder-length auburn hair danced in a light afternoon breeze.

    God no, Robbie said emphatically. The old bastard would probably have us arrested if he did.

    He sounds like a really nice guy, Pete said, his voice coloured with sarcasm. Stepping down onto some rocks at the water’s edge, Pete dipped a finger into the stream to test its temperature. Bit chilly for a swim, he reported.

    Are there any fish in there? Jeff quizzed.

    Pete shrugged. How would I know?

    Robbie tapped Jeff on the shoulder. Let’s go grab our rods and find out.

    Shouldn’t we set up camp first? suggested Caitlin.

    Always the sensible one, Jeff retorted.

    Pete came back
