About this audiobook
From J. Todd Scott comes a chillingly engrossing thriller about a cult survivor who must confront the horrors of her past to ensure the safety of the future.
Ten years after a fiery raid kills her family, former cult member Sybilla “Billie” Laure has a completely new identity. She’s settled in rural Colorado with her daughter, hoping for a quieter life. But the world has other plans.
With wildfires raging and birds dropping from the sky, Billie wonders if her cult leader father’s apocalyptic predictions are finally coming true. When an intruder murders her husband and kidnaps her daughter, Billie has no choice but to confront the secrets of her past. But Billie’s journey has other perils, too—namely, a police chief hot on her trail, determined to expose the dangers of the defunct doomsday cult.
To save her daughter, Billie will have to go back to where it all began—to the ruined compound in New Mexico where the real threat is the truth.
J. Todd Scott
J. Todd Scott was born in rural Kentucky and attended college and law school in Virginia, where he set aside an early ambition to write to pursue a career as a federal agent. His assignments have taken him all over the United States and the world, but a gun and a badge never replaced his passion for stories and writing. His previous books include The Far Empty, High White Sun, and This Side of Night in the Chris Cherry / Big Bend Series, as well as the Appalachian crime novel Lost River. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I have an obsessive love of this author's first 3 Chris Cherry books, and his next one, "Lost River" which sadly did not involve Chris Cherry, but was still a good read. I knew going in that "The Flock" was going to be a complete departure from those books, but I thought, what the heck--his other books have been total winners, so I'll give it a try. I'm not sure what the deal is with my favorite authors deciding to go down the supernatural road--with Craig Johnson and James Lee Burke, I assume maybe after decades, they have finally exhausted all their plot ideas and going supernatural is their escape route. It's hard to imagine that Mr. Scott has run out of ideas after only 4 published books, so I can't imagine why he chose to go with this hallucinogenic story. I trudged through to the end, despite my misgivings, and was rewarded with the realization that I had wasted several hours I'll never get back. I HATE giving him a negative review, but this one is just not for me.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The Flock. J.Todd Scott. 2022. Sybilla (cult name) comes home to fine her husband dead and her daughter kidnapped. She has been hiding under an assumed name since she escaped from a cult, the Ark of Lazarus when the FBI raided it. Members of the cult who have been in hiding since the raid, took her daughter. Sybilla is desperate and determined to get her daughter back. Ark of Lazarus was compared to the Branch Davidian raid, and I suspect this is where the idea of the novel came. I didn’t especially like it, and I am not sure why. Mildly suspenseful, I guess.
