About this audiobook

From New York Times bestselling authors Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison comes a riveting thriller pitting special agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine against the head of a private space agency who has the power to end the world as we know it.

It’s Bastille Day in France, and the private French space agency Galactus—France’s answer to Space X, owned by the eccentric treasure hunter Jean-Pierre Broussard—has just sent a satellite payload into orbit. Billed as a “communications” satellite, it harbors a frightening reality: a nuclear electromagnetic pulse has been hidden aboard.

In days, when the satellite is in position, Galactus’s head and Broussard’s second in command, Dr. Neveah Patil, will have the power to lay waste to the world with her EMP, and create her own immortality with the Holy Grail—the stones of the heavens and the very treasure Broussard has spent his life searching for.

The countdown has begun, and Special Agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine will go down to the wire to stop this heinous attack. With their signature “nonstop action with enough realism to keep you thinking and scare the daylights out of you at the same time” (Suspense Magazine), Coulter and Ellison have created a thriller to take you on a breakneck and breathtaking journey.

FBI agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine have their hands full. Astronaut Neveah Patel is on an EVA spacewalk when her tether cord snaps. She should have died. Instead, she’s convinced that aliens saved her and somehow guided her back to her spacecraft. The aliens want her to do their bidding. NASA grounds her and insists it’s a delusion. Real? Not real? In the meantime, she’s going to detonate a nuclear bomb and EMP on the aliens say-so. This book turned into an Indiana Jones-type adventure, with a search for the Holy Grail, helicopters, futuristic submarines, high seas adventures, space flight, and much more.

Agents Drummond and Caine are supposed to be on vacation. If you have read any of the other books in this series, “A Brit in the FBI” you will not be surprised to see them burst into action to track down the crazies who threaten the forces of good. Fast, action packed, a breathtaking roller coaster ride of a thriller. The storyline gives attention to what has happened in space, a catastrophe at sea and the race to stop what may happen on earth. The baddies are scary bad but so crazy brilliant that you have to admire the depth of the research that made the scientific part of the story understandable. There is so much going on but it all hung together, kept my interest and I just didn’t want to put this book down. Thank you Netgalley and Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books for a copy.

The Last Second is the first book I've read by the authors. Aliens? It's a little out there. The EMP on the other hand is totally plausible. The two agents have a good reporie and respect for the other. I immediately liked the characters. There likeable, intelligent and engaging. The story is good for the most part. Very well written and action packed. It's tense, dramatic and thrilling from beginning to end. I will read more from the authors. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This will be a satisfying read for those who look for fast-moving plot rather than literary writing. Although it is fifth in a series, it stands well alone, and past episodes and characters are woven well into the narrative, at least until the 2nd epilogue. Mike and Nicholas are the main characters, but their point of view alternates with that of Pierre, a wealthy treasure seeker looking for a magical cure for his dying daughter, and that of Nevaeh, a disgraced astronaut looking for immortality. Since Nevaeh believes that aliens are speaking to her and urging her to find the holy grail in order to destroy the earth as we know it, the time countdown until that destruction builds suspense as Mike and Nicholas hurry to uncover and thwart that plot.

From the beginning, this storyline pulls you in & grabs your attention. The fate of the world rests on Nicholas Drummond & Michaela Caine’s shoulders. The idea of an EMP is both plausible & terrifying. The idea that two special agents need to figure it out & stop it is scary! The plot moves quickly but is easy to follow. With scenes taking place on both land & sea at basically the same time, the writers manage to mesh them together perfectly. There was a lot of violent battles between the opposing factions which make perfect sense in this type of story & the scenes are perfectly synchronized. The characters are well developed & lifelike. In every story, it seems like more of Nicholas & Michaela’s personality come forward. Their relationship seems to grow before the readers eyes. This was another fascinating story from a team of terrific writers.
