About this audiobook

Come Sundown named as one of Whoopi Goldberg's "Favorite Summer Reads" on ABC's The View and one of NY Post's biggest blockbuster "Whizbang Books" of the summer.

A novel of suspense, family ties, and twisted passions from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Obsession...

The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it’s kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine’s aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born. She never returned, and the Longbows don’t talk about her much. The younger ones, who never met her, quietly presume she’s dead. But she isn’t. She is not far away, part of a new family, one she never chose―and her mind has been shattered…

When a bartender leaves the resort late one night, and Bo and Cal discover her battered body in the snow, it’s the first sign that danger lurks in the mountains that surround them. The police suspect Cal, but Bo finds herself trusting him―and turning to him as another woman is murdered and the Longbows are stunned by Alice’s sudden reappearance. The twisted story she has to tell about the past―and the threat that follows in her wake―will test the bonds of this strong family, and thrust Bodine into a darkness she could never have imagined.

Come Sundown is set on a resort/ranch in Montana, owned by the Bodine family. It begins with a glimpse of the past...Alice Bodine is on her way home after running away, but she is kidnapped and held captive by a crazy man. No one knew she was coming home, so no one looks for her. Fast forward to the present and the family is all together on the ranch (except for Alice). Then a young woman is found murdered and the mystery begins. Is there a connection between this murder and Alice's disappearance? Once you get into the story, it becomes a real page-turner with a few romances thrown in as well.

Split decision on this one. The main character, Bodine, was not very interesting. She runs a ranch in Montana. Okay. Her sister Alice, who is missing for many years, has a much more compelling story. Yet Alice is not given as much attention as Bodine. I found myself skimming Bodine's story waiting to get to plots more interesting. Overall, not one of Roberts best but I give it a modest thumbs up.

I loved this story. Set on a ranch/resort in Montana owned by the Bodine family. Bodine Longbow runs the resort and her brothers work at both the ranch & the resort. A aunt that Bodine never met has been missing for many years. The story goes back and forth between what is happening on the ranch and what is happening with Aunt Alice. Callen Skinner comes to work for Bodine at about the time two women are murdered near the ranch. A twisted tale reveals some dark things have been happening close to the ranch for years. A good read!

Nora Roberts has the uncanny ability to make you love her characters, their jobs, and their lives. In Come Sundown, Roberts explores the world of the western ranch/resort. Bodine Longbow is the boss of the resort and runs it efficiently. When Callen Skinner returns after wrangling horses in Hollywood, Bodine finds a reason to make time for him and his adorable horse, Sundown. In the background of Bodine's story is Alice, her aunt, who was taken captive after spending years away from her family and finally coming home. Alice spends the next several years becoming dependent on her captor and giving him children that he takes away from her leaving her alone and unloved. When Alice accidentally escapes and is found, a manhunt begins involving Bodine's entire family.
Once again, Nora Roberts weaves a story of a large, happy family coming to terms with loss, sorrow, and the depths of love.

    Come Sundown by Nora Roberts

    2017

It's been awhile since I've read a Nora Roberts book.
I've mostly read the series books. This definitely had a different flow.

It was a rather complex story about family and rekindled friendships. There is a long history within the Bodine Ranch that is rich with mystery and turmoil. Through the years the family has found its way to grown stronger and more connected as a result. The story overall was strong and provided interesting if not sometimes predictable characters. I found parts of the story to drag on in parts that I didn't feel added much to the plot. The lag caused me to lose focus on some key information which would have helped me piece together the conclusion.

I had hoped for more but it was still an enjoyable read.

This is another great story by Nora. She know how to add suspense in with romance and family. The woman who was trapped with a monster for 26 years was very sad and scary. At least, they found the man eventually. Boeing was a very strong and capable leader.

Another good Roberts novel. Needs to come with HUGE trigger warnings, though, so I had a difficult time getting through parts of the story. Worth it in the end, though. I'm really glad the characters are all open and honest with each other. The conflicts aren't born of miscommunication or dishonesty; they're horrible, outside conflicts that only serve to make the couples stronger. Now I want to travel to Montana.

Also, the state berry of Montana is the huckleberry. I know that know.

This book goes back and forth in history a bit starting from 1991 when in Montana a young woman, Alice Bodine who is hitchhiking back home for Thanksgiving after being away for a while is picked up by a psycho who wants to use her as his "wife" to conceive sons off her. He chains her up in the basement of his cabin and rapes her continuously until she gets pregnant with a child that is a girl whom he takes away from her and sells to someone because girls are of no interest to him. This breaks her heart. She gets pregnant again with another girl and it's taken away too. Then finally she's pregnant with a boy and gets to keep that child and raise him for a year until he is taken away to be raised by "Sir" the man who has taken her. She convinces him to let her have some time outside at night once a week.Meanwhile back at the Bodine ranch life moved on and her sister Maureen married Sam and had three children, Chase, Bodine, and Rory. She and her mother and her grandmother started a resort for those wanting the cowboy experience and Bodine runs it with Rory as the PR guy. Chase works on the ranch. Bodine recently hired Jessica as the events coordinator. Someone from Bodine's past has come back to the Bodine Ranch: Callen Skinner an older wild boy she had a crush on who ran off to Hollywood to work on movies with horses but now wants to settle down in Montana with his horse that could be a show horse Sundown. Sparks fly between the two of them but they decide to wait until Abe who runs the horses at the resort comes back from a sudden need to take a vacation with his wife to Arizona before they try anything considering that Cal has decided to take over for him until he gets back instead of working on the ranch. Then they find out that Abe and his wife isn't coming back and the job is his if he wants it and things really begin to heat up between the two of them.Meanwhile, one of the resort employees, Billy Jean was riding home from work and ran out of gas and came across the wrong guy and was murdered running away from him. Twenty minutes away in downtown Missoula a young woman is changing her tire when someone stops to help her and she is never seen again. Eventually, her remains are found in the woods by a nature photographer. She had been hit on the head by a lug wrench. The two cases seem connected somehow. Then one night Sir leaves in a hurry and leaves the front door unlocked and Alice decides to walk out and wanders to the road where she passes out and is found by a couple passing by in their truck. She is immediately recognized by the sheriff who grew up with her and calls her family. Her sister and grandmother had always been angry with her for leaving, but her mother kept worrying over her and hoping that she'd come home. Now the family has to deal with guilty feelings for being angry at her when she was locked up all this time and went through hell and is having a difficult time coming back to them and is scared to death that Sir will come after her.But not everyone is happy to have Cal back. Garrett Clintok has had it in for Cal since they were kids and now that there are two dead women he is sure that Cal is the one who did it even though the Sheriff has suspended him for harassing Cal and threatening him at work. Clintock is gunning for Cal quite literally it seems and both he and Sundown get shot while out riding. This experience of his leaving and coming back like he did and having someone come after him, just like Alice, helps him bond with Alice and helps her to heal. But someone is still going after young girls and they believe it is Sir but what if he has help from someone? And where is his place located at? Alice was rather confused when she left that night and is unable to help lead them back there.Once more Roberts delivers a stellar book about a strong family that looks after each other and those in their employee. Bodine is a strong female character with a stubborn streak who runs the resort like a well-oiled machine and seems to have boundless energy. She also believes in being there for her employees and really getting to know them all. The two grandmothers are a hoot and fun to read about. And Cal is a guy who used to have a short fuse on his temper but has learned to control it while he was away and moved back to be closer to his sister and mother after the suicide of his gambling father. He wants to build his own ranch but not on the land he grew up on which is why he sells it to the Longbows. He and Cal fit together really well, as do Jess and Chase and Rory and Chelsea, a woman who works in the office with Jessica. Jessica and Bodine make good friends too. Overall this is just a great story about redemption and overcoming horrific circumstances and the deep bonds of family. I give it five out of five stars. QuotesIt’s done. You come back at me again, come back at any who matter to me, I won’t just put you on the ground. I’ll put you in it. Believe it.-Nora Roberts (Come Sundown p 425)She didn’t need a lot of fuss, but if and when the man she now realized she’d been walking toward all her life told her he loved her, she’d at least like him to say so when he wasn’t bleeding.-Nora Roberts (Come Sundown p 432)

Another outstanding book by Roberts! It takes a lot to make me cry but this book did it especially with the audio performance added to it. Elisabeth Rodgers did a wonderful job playing Alice's character. She really nailed it! This is one book that you definitely need to listen to the audio so you can get the full effect.

Loved this book but I like cowboys. Great characters that are likable, great plot, and great setting. The story pulled me into the lives of the characters and made me care for them. Lots of action and a lot about relationships and what it's like to be in a tight-knit family and community. Good ending that was quick and terrifying. Well worth the read and great while on vacation.

Come sundown by Nora RobertsThe family business is running the ranch.Bo runs it when Alice Bodine and she's returning home with all of her posssessions. She recalls what had drawn her away...The story moves to the present day where we find Maureen ahead of her schedule.Other ranchers would be doing their chores. She runs the resort. Love the idea of what all the resort offers, all inclusive for sure. Like ideas for the winter holidays to draw more to the area.Story alternates between the ranch and resort to what Alice is going through.Like hearing of all the relationships, in all different age groups. The stories do combine towards the end when clues start getting solved. Love this book although it left me so scared and things were happening.Would make a great series with so many characters in the family.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

COME SUNDOWN by Nora RobertsThe only other Nora Roberts (J D Robb) book I have read is her dystopian YEAR ONE. This is a stand-alone thriller. The Bodine Ranch and Resort are both run by a close knit family. Bodine Longbow, the eldest daughter is the focus of the book and the COO of the family enterprise. She is clearly drawn and multidimensional as is Callen Skinner, a new hire and old acquaintance. Alice, Bodine’s aunt, who has been missing for years is an integral part of the plot as is Sundown, a highly trained and intelligent horse. When young women start disappearing and then are found murdered in the close vicinity of the ranch, the plot becomes apparent. There are plenty of red herrings, plot twists, love interests and Ranch/Resort complications to keep the reader interested in this 450 page novel. Roberts is a master of the thriller/love story genre and it shows in this outing.5 of 5 stars for a convincing thriller with likeable characters, interesting locale and pleasing secondary plots.

The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family owned business that is home to four generations. Sitting on over thirty thousand acres it's kept busy by lots of vacationers and kept running by a large staff which includes big boss Bodine Longbow. Although the family is very close, Bodine's aunt Alice ran away before she was even born and never came back. She hasn't been heard from in over twenty-five years and she's not often talked about. No one ever imagined that she'd been close by for so long, kept prisoner in a basement, having unimaginable things happen to her. When one of the bartenders from the resort is found dead, it's the first sign that danger is close by.

This is a big book! It took me a long time to get into it. It's mostly all about the ranch and resort - what goes on during work days with the horses and who is going to work where on whatever day. There's lots of cooking. I was confused the whole time (and still am) about who was Bodine's nana and who was her grammy. It seemed everyone was getting married after a first date. The big reveal was anticlimactic for me. "Sir" drove me nuts with his misogynist bullshit and I absolutely hated him!! But despite all these things I found myself wrapped up in all their drama. The characters were strong and the setting was beautiful. And I loved the horses.

I won a copy of this book through a Goodreads Giveaway. Thank you to St. Martin's Press for an ARC.

COME SUNDOWNNORA ROBERTSMY RATING ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️▫️PUBLISHERBillliance AudioPUBLISHEDMay 30, 2017NARRATEDElizabeth RodgersA gripping mystery about family, strength and love that will have you flipping pages until late into the night. SUMMARYThe Bodine Ranch and Resort in western Montana is a family business and home to a family of four generations. The resort is kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of her family and a large staff, including her brother’s childhood friend and new hire Callen Skinner. There use to be another member of the family, Bodine’s Aunt Alice, but she ran off to California in 1991, long before Bodine was even born, and she has never returned. The Bodines haven't heard from her in years and they don't talk much about her. Now women are being murdered in the area surrounding the ranch. The first is a beloved bartender from the resort. Her battered body is found in the snow by Bodine and Callen after seeing her car on the side of a wooded road. It's the first time they have ever felt danger lurking in the mountains that surround the ranch. The police suspect Callen, but Bodine knows better, and then another woman is found murdered. The Bodines and Longbows families are stunned by the murders, and the accusations that Callen might be involved. The close knit family works together to find out who might be responsible. Bodine is in the middle of it all! REVIEWThe Bodine Ranch and Resort sounds like a fun place to go, and the resort’s business is booming. Bodine is a organized, business woman who is always in charge. She has an agenda and a list going from the minute her stylish boots hit the floor in the morning. She’s recently hired a few new employees to help lighten her load. I really love Bodine’s take charge character. Her connection with Callen’s horse wrangling character is pretty sweet as well, but I think Sundown, Callen’s horse really steals the show in terms of character development. He’s got moves and you got to love a horse who knows how to communicate! The mystery is a good one and moves along fast with several twists and turns. There are a few romances blossoming, but the intrigue about the murdered women and whatever might have happen to Aunt Alice soon becomes a pivotal part of the story. The essence of COME SUNDOWN all boils down to the importance of family and home. The bonds with family: mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents aunts and uncles are forever. Even though your family may irritate you, you still love them. And sometime you just need the strength to go home. Love the symbolic use of the sunsets signifying new beginnings. I listened to the Audible version of this book and loved the narrator, Elizabeth Rodgers. She did an excellent job with varying all the voices for the numerous characters, both young and old, and male and female. Very distinctive for each and very enjoyable. Sometimes you just need a NORA ROBERTS book, even when you don't know that you want one! This was one of those times! Saw this book come out and thought why not! Glad I read it., it was like coming home again, since I haven't read one of hers in a couple of years. It contained a few of my must haves for a good book. Strong female characters, interesting setting, and a multilayered plot. A little romance is nice as well! Thanks NORA ROBERTS for the great book.

This was my first and most likely last Nora Roberts book. I was not impressed and it was so formulaic that you could see the twist and the ending a mile away. Some might try to classify this as romantic suspense, but the suspense is so minimal I don't even want it included. It's nearly 500 pages of romantic fluff, cliches, cowboys, ranch life, independent women, kidnapping, and family secrets. It goes back and forth in time to show the disappearance of a girl in the early nineties, the mind of a deranged kidnapper and rapist, and the modern day life of the manager of a huge family ranch and resort. It's nothing to write home about.

The story begins in 1995 when twenty-one year old Alice Bodine is hitchhiking her way back to the family ranch outside of Missoula, Montana. She had left three years earlier right after her sister Maureen's wedding in the hopes of building a career in Hollywood. She still has some miles to go and night is falling when a man in a pick-up offers her a ride. She doesn't know that he is going to kidnap her, rape her, imprison her and abuse her for more than twenty-five years. Then the story switches to the present day. The Bodine Ranch and Resort is thriving under the care of Bodine Longbow, Alice's niece. She and her family including her siblings, parents, grandmother and great-grandmother are a tight knit group. Bodine doesn't miss Alice since she never knew her but knows her grandmother still thinks about her often and wonders what happened to her.Meanwhile, Cal Skinner comes home. Cal grew up on a neighboring ranch and was her older brother Chase's best friend. He did build a career in Hollywood managing horses but is back now. Bodine has a crush on him when she was young but he didn't think of her as anything more than his best friend's little sister. Things have changed now that they are both grown up.Before they can do more than looking longingly at each other, a young woman employee of the resort is murdered. Then a second young woman is kidnapped and her body found on the resort. One of the Sheriff's deputies who has had a hate on for Cal since childhood is convinced that Cal is the killer and harasses him. Before the real killer is found, a brutalized and damaged Alice manages to escape from her kidnapper and her re-entry into the family not only changes the family dynamic but links the current murders to her kidnapping many years earlier. This was an engaging story with Alice's story woven into it in a series of flashbacks. It also has a number of romances since not only Bodine but her brother's Chase and Rory also find romantic partners. The story has a number of Roberts's signature details in the strong family relationships among the Bodine-Longbows and the strong friendships among the younger generation. This one also has a great setting and talks a lot about the beauty of Montana. Nora Roberts fans won't want to miss this engaging story.

Best-selling authors are best-selling authors for a reason --- they write good books! Nora Roberts is such an author. Ms. Roberts’ latest book is a very good book. The Bodine/Longbows seem to live a story-book life – they have a large ranch and a successful resort. Both businesses are run by the family – and everything seems fine. However, as we all know, nothing is as it seems. Years before, one of the Bodine daughters ran away, and never returned. Almost thirty years later, the family still misses her. The reader knows that she didn’t just run away – she was abducted and has been held prisoner for all of those years. How the family finds their way back together is just one subplot of the book – there is also the mystery surrounding the murder of two young women in the area. The author tells a great story – one that keeps you reading. The characters in this book are believable – the setting is spectacular. There is action – and, of course, romance. What more could you ask for? (Maybe a cup of coffee to enjoy while reading it!)I won this book as a GoodReads Giveway in exchange for a fair review.

A member of the Bodine family, Alice Bodine, has been missing for 25 years prior to the opening of the story. During the time she's been gone, The Bodine Ranch and Resort, resided on by four generations, has grown into a thriving enterprise. Alice Bodine's name is scarcely mentioned by the family because of the differing opinions regarding her hasty departure from their Montana home. On the day she left at age 18, leaving behind no more than a scribbled goodbye note, it was her sister's wedding day. The family heard from her from time to time at first, and then nothing for decades. Little do they know that Alice was on her way back to Bodine Ranch three years after she left, but was abducted and held captive for 25 years. When she's found, the entire family welcomes her back, sympathetic to her plight, and does everything in their power to help rehabilitate Alice. While her progress is slow initially, she begins to gradually come around and relief is felt by everyone. But the mystery of who abducted and brutally mistreated Alice for so many years still remains. Could the individual who took her be responsible for the deaths of two other young women who were found on Bodine property? Will Alice's abductor be back to exact revenge on her for getting away from him?Come Sundown was outstanding!! The parallel plot structure, excellent character development and amazing Northwest setting kept me engaged in the story. Getting a peek into life on a working ranch and resort in Montana was an educational experience that I enjoyed because it was formerly unfamiliar to me, and I loved learning so much about it, as well as the western part of the U.S.—the recreational activities there, the lingo, cowboys, horses, the humor and attire were all fascinating and fun lessons that will stay with me for a long time. The close-knit Bodine family and the camaraderie they shared was a true highlight, and anyone who reads this book is sure to be taken in by the endearing characters, especially the cowboy, Callen Skinner, whose gentlemanly ways and boyish charm won me over. By the time I was finished with the book I was ready to take a trip to Montana. I highly recommend this book to those who would enjoy a romance/thriller. Excellently written and difficult to put down, Nora Roberts delivers with Come Sundown. This was my first Nora Roberts book, and now I know what all the hoopla's about. She's an amazing storyteller.

Thanks to St. Martin's Press, via Bookreporter, for an ARC of this new novel by Nora Roberts in exchange for my honest review. The setting is Western Montana, present day with flashbacks starting about 25 years ago to now. This is a romantic suspense that's on the dark side. It involves a large, loving family who owns an upscale ranch/resort. The men family members run the ranch and the women members run the resort. This is a strong family and the protagonist is Bodine who is a very independent woman. The villain is called "Sir" and his character injects lots of heartbreak into this family. His mentality, beliefs, and abuse were hard to read at times.Ms. Roberts does her usual great job of setting scenarios like sunsets, snowfalls, riding trails, and the beautiful Montana landscapes. She put a twist near the end that I didn't see coming! Sundown is the name of a very smart horse who has a memorable role in the novel.I felt the novel was too long with unnecessary side stories and had too many characters. It was sometimes hard to keep track of them until I was about half-way through. Also, so many of the names were similar from over-use of the family's generational names.

Nora Roberts never fails to entertain her readers. This book has all of her trademarks - beautiful women and handsome men, multi-generational family, great friendships and romance, in fact three main romances. This one also adds suspense and a dual time line that all connects at the end. The novel takes place in Montana at a horse farm and popular resort. It's about the Bodine family, two sons and one daughter in the present day family. But it's also about the mother's missing sister and the hole that the disappearance left in the family. Bodine Longbow runs the resort side of the business and is a strong woman who knows that she can accomplish all she wants to by working long, grueling days. She is supported by a large cast of characters both at the resort and at the family ranch. Her world is shattered by the death of two women in the area and the re-appearance of her Aunt Alice after 25 years. This is an interesting well written novel. I wouldn't call it a typical romance because of the dual time line with Alice's story -- those parts of the book are dark and add to the suspense of the book. I thought that it was a fantastic story and one of my favorite Nora Roberts books so far. Thanks to goodreads for a copy of this book to read and review.

COME SUNDOWN BY NORA ROBERTS is not your typical black sheep family member coming home. Alice Bodine IS coming home, on her way actually when she is kidnapped, raped, tortured and forced to become Esther. Her sole purpose for the next 25years, satisfy and have boys for the wacko who kidnapped her. The Bodine Ranch & Resort run by the Bodine family for four generations are running along day after day until Alice is finally returned to the family, then all hell breaks looseI have never been a huge fan of Nora Roberts books but COME SUNDOWN has pushed me a littler further into the Roberts camp. The writing is so vivid that I actually felt like I was living the events of the Bodine family. It didnt take long for me to really get into the book & when I did the ending came as a huge surprise.I received the book free from goodreads in exchange for a review.
