About this audiobook

A blazing new series takes you back to the lawless frontier where every stagecoach was a moving target. Where every passenger needed protection. And where every hired gun who rides along better be fast on the draw-or be dead on arrival . . .

If anyone knows the road to purgatory, it's Red Ryan. As a stagecoach guard, he's faced holdups, ambushes, and all-out attacks from every kill-crazy outlaw, Indian, and prairie rat. But even he's a bit reluctant to take on his next job: riding shotgun with his driver Buttons Muldoon on a stage bound from Fort Concho, Texas, to Fort Bliss.

Word has it, the Apaches are on the warpath. They're being led by the vicious war chief Ilesh, which means "Lord of the Earth." And this lord means business, as in slaughtering every Texan from here to El Paso. Red wants to postpone the stage. But an army major's beautiful but stubborn wife insists they leave-or she'll go it alone. So Red has no choice . . .

Thus begins a nightmare journey into 400 miles of harsh, unforgiving terrain, blood-drunk killers, and one scheming devil who plans to paint the town of El Paso red-starting with Red's blood . . .

Title: Riding Shotgun (Red Ryan Series #1)Author: William W. Johnstone & J. A. JohnstonePages: 352Year: 2019Publisher: PinnacleMy rating: 4 out of 5 stars. The novel has many strengths that might entice readers to open the pages. One is that the main male character, Red Ryan, is a tough man. He has a strong work ethic and goes above and beyond what is necessary to do what is right. Red doesn’t look for trouble, but it seems to follow him none the less. Some of the predicaments he gets entangled in come upon him suddenly and others are by his choice and put him in a spot! Red rides shotgun for a stage company, treats his passengers well and makes sure that any trouble hunting the stage is defeated.Usually Johnstone stories may allude to what is known as the oldest profession in the world. However, in this book I found there were too many references or scenes that specially referenced the act between a man and woman. The scenes were at times overshadowed by this material and made reading the book, although one of the few Johnstone books, less than enjoyable. So, be aware if you read the book, there are more references to sex and such.I hope the next Red Ryan focuses more on action, adventure, mystery, etc. and leaves the other material out of the book.Note: The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility.

A new series involving a stagecoach guard named Red Ryan. His job to protect his passengers whether they be from Indians, outlaws or nuisances. He is a great shot and does a great job, but also doesn’t like to see the law broken. I really wanted to enjoy this western, but the characters are one-dimensional and not developed enough. I couldn’t care less what happens to them or how the story ends. Sorry, this one wasn’t for me.
