About this audiobook

I like my women like I like my whiskey: more than is good for me.

Name's Kane, Kate Kane. I'm a paranormal private investigator, which is like a normal private investigator except-and stop me if you're having trouble following this-more paranormal. This business comes with a few basic rules: don't start drinking before noon, don't get your partner killed, don't sleep with the woman who killed him.

Last year I broke all of them.

The only rule I didn't break was the one that said don't work for vampires. But then a dead werewolf showed up outside the Soho shag palace of Julian Saint-Germain-a bloodsucking flibbertigibbet who's spent the last eight centuries presiding over an ever-growing empire of booze, sex, and hemoglobin.

I shouldn't have taken the job. The last thing I needed was to get caught in a supernatural smackdown between a werewolf pack and a vampire prince. Even if the vampire prince was dangerously my type. But what can I say? I was broke, I'm a sucker for a pretty face and I gave up on making good decisions a long time ago.

A female private investigator whose main clients are paranormal, but she won't work for vampires until the right price is offered. There was a murder and she was hired to find out who did it.

Very similar to other paranormal series, but this one has a lot more 'funnies'. Some of the one-liners, and snarky comments got me laughing, a few snorts, and quite a few eye rolls. It gave life to an almost overdone plotline.

This is supposed to be book one of a series, but there was so much 'backstory', that I felt as if this wasn't the first book, and even doubled checked to make sure this wasn't some type of spin-off.

Though, copying lines/ideas from other works, like 'horse and hound,' bothered me because it's playing on the copyright infringement lines. But if credit had been given to where it was from, then it wouldn't have bothered me.

Some of the phrases, like 'here lies Kate Kane...' while were funny at the beginning and changed throughout, did get a little irritating after being repeated so many times. And there were a few paragraphs where a word was repeated more than twice.

Even though I liked the story: the world, plot, and the characters, I doubt I'll read any more of this series. There's too much porn for me. I figured there was going to be some from the blurb, but there are some very sexually explicit scenes, and I don't have time to skip the audio. I don't want to listen/read about it. So don't let your kids read this!

It's disappointing that authors are starting to avoid labeling their works honestly, but there are so many books out there that the retailers don't have the manpower to call them out. (But then again it makes them a lot of money and they can deny knowledge when a reader finally calls it out.) So I have to take a star away for the dishonesty. It's a heavy fine, but just.
