- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Darn it. I shouldn't have read this. Now I'm going to have to go and buy all the others in this series! Brilliant dragon fantasy, starting with one not-quite a princess, one not-quite a dragon, and ending with an abundance of fully qualified dragons, a mystery of magic to be resolved, and a hopeless love relationship that Marc Secchia had better find a way to resolve, or else! Although one can just about read this book as a stand-alone, I can't imagine a reader who would want to stop here. One of his best.

Very nearly five stars. 4.5
What I loved most about this novel was the language. The author had such an incredible way of describing the simplest things. I knew the novel was going to be no boring ride when I stumbled upon this line within the first chapter. “She wondered if Ra’aba’s stroke had chipped chunks of bone off her spine. Her flesh flapped loosely, slapping against her back with a wet, plopping sound.” Holy smokes. Seriously. I wondered what I got myself into.
So many amazing lines. The characters were deep and profound. My fave parts were how the characters all had strange inklings for each other. But they don't know how define the friendship, yet they knew they would die for the other. And all the intense and uncomfortable stares between dragon and human, dragonet and human, and human and monk. Eep! Loved. Loved it. I couldn’t decide whose relationship I liked the best. Ja'al and Lia, Flicker and Lia, or Grandion and Lia. Each was different, but each brought depth and growth to Lia's character.
A few parts of the novel confused me. With all the heavy words, I missed a lot of details and the author wrote so deeply in his world that a lot of the terms and events soared above my head. Often scenes seemed to jump, but I just went with the story until it made sense again.
I kept thinking Lia, the main character, was older. Whenever her age was brought up, it made me disappointed that the author didn't make her older. For fifteen she accomplishes the impossible because she is a strong and capable woman.
This story will amaze you.
Highly recommended.
Reader rated for ages 16 for moderate violence; also contains non-detailed nudity and mild crude humor. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dragonfriend (Dragonfriend #1) by Marc Secchia is such an awesome dragon book, probably the best since The Pern series came out. I fell in love with it right away and it lasted right through to the sobbing end. I have the next book ready. It had all my emotions on a roller coaster ride, in a good way. What a wonderful imagination! There is humor, suspense, compassion, anger, pain, happiness, joy, love, hate, and so much more in this great fantasy. I felt I was there. There was also fighting, battles, struggles, adventure, and lots of danger to go along with the few pleasant moments. Truly, one great book, going in my favorites!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is why I like fantasy so much, that and dragons.Hualiama is a 15 year old girl who really doesn't know where she came from. She feels that she has been raised by dragons. Lia is a half-daughter of the king who beats her and who she really doesn't like. What worse is Ra'aba who (at the start of the story), slices Lia's back and then throws her off the dragonship. Flicker, a dragonet, catches and saves Lia. They become friends as you can tell from the bantering back and forth between them. Between Flicker and later the Monks, Lia finds her destiny. Enters a tourmaline dragon, Grandion, who teachers her even more.Lia goes after Ra'aba; he has taken over her father's kingdom and a war between Ra'aba and his dragons and Lia with hers starts and ends with tragedy. This is a fast pace story, with a strong female protagonist and s smart-mouth dragonet, who leaches the dragon things about humans. You will laugh and cry with Lia, and rally her to win her battle with Ra'aba. This is one series I will love to continue on with. And I would recommend it to all fantasy readers.I got this book free by the author in exchange for my honest review.
