This is a "romantic thriller" about a female private investigator set to investigate the murder of a ranch owner's wife 8 years earlier. Kade's wife's car was recently found, so the murder is fresh on the mind of Kade. He hires Ellie to find his wife's killer. I think it would have been much better if the author didn't have Kade and Ellie lusting for each other every single time they saw the other one. No one is that hot for another person that they can't think of anything else while in the presence of the other person. It was just ridiculous. I would like to read a book where the man is attracted to the woman for her personality, her intelligence, her career--- instead of her perky breasts and sexy rear. And, to top it off, Kade was possessive and aggressive in his feelings for her. If the book had been written as a thriller with a lot less of the lust, it would have been a far better story.

When I read, it is for many reasons -- to escape reality, to be in another world, to read a story that will stay with me, or just to be entertained for a few hours. I want to laugh, cry, feel the emotions the characters do -- not all in one book of course, but those are just a few of the reasons.I especially want to be entertained. I love mysteries; they are my favorite getaway. I especially like Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, Erle Stanley Gardner -- and many modern day writers as well. But these three I mention because they could weave a mystery like no other, all without sex or foul language -- which is something this author has obviously not been able to do. Therefore, it isn't a well-done mystery at all. If you need sex or foul language to sell a book, then there is something missing. The entire book can be summed up in two sentences of the author's: "After eight years, Sullivan wasn't worried about being linked to a murder investigation. He just wanted to get laid." And there you have the book and its basis. I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway, but it did not influence my review.

The Last Goodnight by Kat MartinBlood Ties #1Wanting to finally find out what happened to his murdered wife, Kade Logan hires a PI working for Nighthawk Security to come to his ranch and start an investigation. It is not the first investigation that has been made but eight years after she went missing her car has been found and it triggers a desire to put it all to rest once and for all. The investigator suggested is Eleanor Bowman who is great at undercover assignments and has a nose for unearthing information. Stepping in as the ranch cook…she is set to sleuth…and perhaps fall in love. What I liked: *Eleanor: bright, talented, knows her strengths, doesn’t like cheaters, grew up on a ranch, good at what she does, interesting back story, has chemistry with her new employer. * Kade: wealthy, bright, determined, has trust issues, has the trust of his employees and sees many as his friends, jealous, uses his fists from time to time, loyal, workaholic, protector, has chemistry with Eleanor* Kade’s employees on the ranch – good men with potential for romance in the future* At first thought this would be a series about Nighthawk Security and its employees but then realized it is probably about Kade and his brothers. That said, I can see that there could be overlap and the potential for a great number of books using the characters from the security firm and the ranch as well as the community Kade lives in. * The red herrings, twists, and turns* That Kade was not perfect…and neither was Eleanor* That the H/h both were able to express what they did/did not want* The side romance between Maria and Alejandro* Billy: would like to hear more about this youth* Zoe: Ellie’s friend and computer expert recently employed by Nighthawk Security* Gage and Edge: Kade’s brothers – great potential for them to have interesting books in the series* That the bad guy was found and dealt with* That there are more books to look forward in the seriesWhat I didn’t like: * The people and events I was meant not to like – easy to dislike this murderer* Not a dislike but, would have preferred that Kade was a nicer person, less stuck in gender stereotypes, and a bit less edgy BUT it worked in the story so perhaps he is just not my ideal book boyfriend. Did I enjoy this book? YesWould I read more in this series? YesThank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.4 Stars

Let me start off by saying that I love Kat Martin. I have been reading her books for years, and have read I think all of her books even her historical books, can't say that I have loved all of her books, probably most of her books, but I did love this one. Elle was a strong heroine who knew what she wanted and wasn't going to settle for less, what I appreciated from her was that she didn't have to be bitchy about it and I liked that. She had been burned before so she knew how it felt and had told herself she would not be put in that predicament again, she would not give another man control over her. Kade, needed someone to find out who had murdered his wife 8 years ago, he was on the verge of divorcing her since she was always cheating on him, so he thought she had left with one of her lovers, but come to find out that she was murdered and they had just found out when they found her vehicle so he want to find out so he can dispense his own brand of justice. The minute he sees Elle he has an attraction and but he could never trust another woman again, Elle will help him find out who this person was, and who is now causing all this conflict on Kade's farm and on his employees and on his land. While there, things are heating up heating up between up, but Kade is going apeshit anytime some guy shows any type of interest in Elle, do to his past, but he has to realize she is not his ex- oh I know I can't tell you more, but grab it, you will Enjoy!Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author...(Netgalley) Voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and reviews.
