About this audiobook

In the spirit of Ruth Hogan and Adriana Trigiani, bestselling British author Debbie Johnson brings us the ultimate in “happy tears”: a heartfelt story about a woman seizing the chance to reconnect with her lost love.

The truth changes everything.

For years Jess believed that Joe—the father of her child and the only man she ever loved—had abandoned her during her greatest time of need. That belief nearly destroyed her. Seventeen years later, when cleaning out her mother’s house, Jess unpacks a box of cards and letters hidden in the attic and makes a discovery that changes everything about life as she knows it.

Shaken but empowered, Jess—and her two stalwart best friends—set out on a remarkable journey to follow a set of faded postmarks around the world. Is Joe still alive? Does he know that Jess never forgot him? Maybe their love story isn’t over.

Maybe one day they’ll find each other again…

Oh my! I have never cried so much! This story starts out with a funeral and goes from there. Initially I thought the narrator was wooden and was not going to give it very long. But. The amount of EMOTION that is conveyed about the joy and sorrow and grief that life can bring… This is a book that I will definitely be recommending to everyone I know! I will be checking out any other titles by this author. As well as any by this narrator. Well done!

Jess meets Joe on her first day in a new school. This meeting would change both of their lives forever. Due to tragic events and the manipulation of Jess's supposed well meaning parents, they are kept apart. When Jess's mother dies, she finds a box of letters from Joe in the attic that have been kept from her. Along with her cousin and a friend, Jess sets out to find Joe by following the clues in the letters. In the process of looking for him, she comes to terms with her circumstances and learns about the people Joe's life has touched while on his own search for peace. I loved this story. There are some truly heart crushing moments in this book as well hopeful ones. I looked forward to every new twist and turn in Jess's search for Joe hoping that they would be given a second chance at a life together. A wide variety of people are encountered along the way, and their unique stories make the overall story richer. This is not exactly the read I expected. It was so much better than I expected. I can't wait to recommend it to my book club and hopefully use it for a group read. My sincere thanks to William Morrow and Custom House as well as NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book and give my unbiased opinion of it.

I'm always on the lookout for books with a love story at the centre, preferably love against the odds or forbidden love. Maybe One Day very much fits into that category. This is Jess's story. As the book begins she's just attended her mother's funeral and for the first time in years she doesn't really have a purpose. She's late 30s and she's accompanied back to the house she shared with her mother by her cousin, Michael, who is very early 20s. I really enjoyed the dynamics between these two characters who are old enough to be mother and son and yet have a really fun relationship. They decide to look in the attic and find a shoebox of letters to Jess from Joe, the man she loved when she was at college. For some reason Joe disappeared from her life but here is the evidence that maybe it wasn't quite that simple. It's a fairly well-trodden storyline and yet it felt fresh in this book. It took a little getting into for me personally but once Jess, Michael, and Jess and Joe's old friend, Belinda, decide to go on a trip to track down Joe by following the postmarks on his letters and postcards, well that's when it really took off for me and I loved the whole mystery and the gathering of evidence in Manchester, Dublin, Wexford, Cornwall, London and then….well that would be telling.I realise that this makes it sound like a fluffy bit of fun and actually it's far from that. It's incredibly sad and moving and the background story, which only unfolds as the book progresses, is utterly heartbreaking. Maybe One Day is a sweet story, funny and light-hearted at times, but with this spectre at the feast always loitering there, for Jess at least. I was rooting for her and hoping that she would find Joe and be happy. Whether she does or not is something you will have to find out for yourself. It's a reminder that there's often more than one side to any story and sometimes you need to find out what the other side is to be able to move on.
