King, a dog, and Kayla, his human, are on vacation visiting Grandma when they come across a little dog who is lost. Can they find the dog's home for him? This is another title in an ongoing series; it doesn't really seem to matter which order the reader picks them up in though. There are so many great things to love about this series:- a girl of color as a main character;- simple mysteries for young readers;- short, quick chapters for beginning readers to work through on their own or with limited guidance; and- an enthusiastic dog who narrates the whole story.I also appreciate how Kayla always approaches her mysteries to solve by writing down what they know and what they don't know. This seems like a great way to tackle a problem and a wonderful way to model that for young readers. The illustrations complement the story nicely. They show that Kayla and her grandmother are Black, while the family with the missing dog appear to be Latino. Other neighbors/families are White. Both people and dogs convey their emotions and thoughts through facial expressions and body language, which is just like real life.
