About this audiobook

“The best living Italian crime writer.”—Il Manifesto
An unscrupulous womanizer, as devoid of morals now as he once was full of idealistic fervor, returns to Italy, where he is wanted for a series of crimes. To earn himself the guise of respectability, he is willing to go as far as murder.

Editor's Note

Dark swirl of a novel…

Be prepared for a dark, blunt force swirl of a novel. Giorgio Pellegrini is an amoral sociopath with a hefty dose of misogyny. Written by an ex-con hailed as the “Mediterranean Master of Noir,” “The Goodbye Kiss” gives a stark look at a wanted criminal whose unredeemable traits are next level. In this first book of a three-part collection, Pellegrini returns to Italy and falls in with a rough crowd of fellow cons, leading him on a heist that kicks off this series with a bang.

Utterly execrable narration made what might be a well-written story unlistenable.

Oh my, this is a nasty little book. An ex-revolutionary cuts a deal and turns himself into the authorities. He is eventually let go, and begins a five-year process of "rehabilitation." During these five years, he works in a strip club, commits rape, bribery, robbery and murder, all on the path to becoming a respectable member of society. A winner. Carlotto is an Italian writer with a seemingly mean-spirited view of the world. This book is certainly comparable to works of American noir like Cain's POSTMAN, but it is also capable of some more thought-provoking moments and a level of subtlety that POSTMAN never really demonstrated. Overall, this was a quick and enjoyable, if quite unsettling read.
