- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5If I can guess the killer very early on then so will you! Incredibly cliche characters, boring romance and overall just a bland mystery.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5True to my nature I read the second of this series first so I knew who the killer was from the start. It really didn’t bother me because I enjoyed the adventure of finding out the how and the why of Harper’s mother’s murder. There remain so many unanswered questions in both this one and the second book…that you know that there will be more great books in this series. Oh…and the character of Detective Luke Wells is worth the time to read these books.

In The Echo Killing by Christi Daugherty, crime reporter Harper McClain is driven to solve a murder that is eerily similar to the still unsolved slaying of her own mother.
Fifteen years earlier, twelve year old Harper arrived home to a discover her mother has been brutally murdered. Fast forward to the current murder of Marie Whitney where Harper catches sight of the victim's twelve year old daughter Camille being escorted from the scene. This immediately strikes chord with Harper and she knows she HAS to see the murder scene. She is stunned to discover it looks so much like her mother's that she is immediately convinced that the two cases are connected. Despite pleas from her friend, photographer Miles Jackson, her love interest, undercover cop Luke Walker and father figure and head of homicide Lt. Robert Smith, Harper refuses to stop investigating both cases.
Harper never recovered from the tragic death of her mother. After her relationship with her father is irrevocably fractured, she becomes quite close to Lt. Smith and his family. Although she spent a lot of time at the police station in the years after losing her mom, she had no interest in becoming a cop. An internship at the local newspaper sets her on the course to become a reporter and her connections with the police make her a natural fit for becoming a crime reporter. Working the evening shift, Harper is a workaholic who does not date or have many friends outside of her childhood pal Bonnie Larson who remains her best friend.
Harper quickly becomes obsessed with Marie's murder after her quick glimpse of the crime scene. When she learns there is absolutely no forensic evidence for the police to investigate, she becomes convinced the perpetrator is a cop. The lack of evidence is also another similarity to her mother's still unsolved murder so Harper becomes focused on trying to find an officer who is connected to both cases. Despite warnings from the detectives working the case, Miles, Luke and her boss, Harper is willing to risk her career, friendships, her fledgling relationship with Luke and ultimately, her life in her zealous attempt to unmask the killer.
The Echo Killing is initially a bit slow paced but it quickly hits its stride and becomes an engrossing mystery that is impossible to put down. Harper is a likable protagonist but she is reckless and so blinded by obsession that will do anything in her quest to prove her theory that both murders are connected. Although savvy readers will most likely guess the perpetrator's identity well before Harper stumbles onto the truth, this does not lessen the overall enjoyment of the unfolding story. Christi Daugherty brings the novel to an exciting conclusion but a couple of loose ends leave the door open for a sequel. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A very promising start to a new series. I really look forward to reading the upcoming books in this series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great first book. Can’t wait for the next one in the series!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY!!!! What a thrill ride! I will tell you that it did take a bit of commitment to get into the book. Once I hit about the half-way point, I needed to hold on to my hat.
I will be looking for more of Harper McClain in the future.
My thanks to netgalley and Minotaur Books for this advanced readers copy. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Echo Killing strikes a perfect balance between characterization, plot, and setting. I loved Harper's character. She's young, independent, and tough as nails when necessary, but also sensitive and, at times, vulnerable. Her character comes alive in this story, as if she could step off the pages and go about her day in the world. The supporting and minor characters are all well developed, each with their own quirks that make them unique individuals. The plot starts as a slow burn, gradually building until I became as obsessed as Harper in finding answers. The whodunit aspect is not obvious, and we have a couple great twists. The author's own experience as a crime reporter adds an extra layer of insight and realism to this story. The Savannah setting comes alive. Rather than the usual southern charm of this type of setting, instead we see the dark edginess hidden in the shadowy night. I normally want closure in a book, even when it's part of a series. Cliffhangers irritate me, at best. This book does have a bit of a cliffhanger ending, but I didn't sputter and complain. (Okay, maybe I did, but just a little.) For the most part, this story stands on its own. The crux of the plot is resolved, and we're left with a couple of loose threads to be pulled in book two. You could read this book on its own and be satisfied.*I received an advance copy from the publisher, via Amazon Vine, in exchange for my honest review.*
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5If the other adult books to come from Ms. Daugherty are like this one, then, I can't wait. Instantly, I connected with the characters as well as the storyline. Harper McClain is a strong female lead. Plus, she is the type of woman I imagine when I picture a crime reporter...fearless, stubborn like a bulldog, quick thinker, and always gets her story. Although, she is lucky to have a great cohort in her cameraman, Miles. Miles has some good resources, willing to get into danger with Harper, and Harper and he make a great team. Finally, I can't forget to mention mystery man and possible love interest, Luke Walker. There is a lot about Luke that was barely revealed. I can't wait to get to know more about Luke as well as I hope to see him more in future books. Harper and Luke's current relationship status is "it's complicated". Make sure that The Echo Killing is on your list to read for 2018. You don't want to miss this book!
