About this audiobook

In Peter James' You Are Dead, the last words Jamie Ball hears from his fiancée, Logan Somervile, are in a terrified mobile phone call from her. She has just driven into the underground car park beneath the apartment block where they live in Brighton, and seen a man acting strangely. Then she screams and the phone goes dead. The police are on the scene within minutes, but Logan has vanished, leaving behind her neatly parked car and cell phone. That same afternoon, workmen digging up an old asphalt path in a park in another part of the city, unearth the remains of a young woman in her early twenties, who has probably been dead for 30 years. At first, to Detective Superintendent Roy Grace and his Major Crime Team, these two events seem totally unconnected. But then another young woman in Brighton goes missing and another body from the past surfaces. At the same time a strange man visits an eminent London psychiatrist, claiming to have a piece of information on the missing woman, Logan, that turns out, at first, to be wrong-or so it seems. It is only later Roy Grace makes the chilling realization that this one thing is the key to both the past and the present-and now, beyond any doubt, he knows that Brighton has its first ever serial killer.

A bit disappointing, the plot seems a it strung out and I'd guessed the villian and his probable location well before it was revealed. The villian's lair seemed highly improbable and that it could have existed without drawing attention of some sort, especially as it was highly unlikely it could have been constructed without help. The continuing sub-plot of Grace's missing wife is getting a bit tedious without a resolution. On the plus side, the police procedural elements, as always appear very authentic and detailed, as they should be given the author's sources!

Yet another excellent outing with Roy Grace and his team. These are always excellent reads, with good plotting and always leave you feeling part of the investigation. However, following the incidents in the last book (no spoilers) this did feel slightly different in some ways. I always enjoy the morning and evening briefing sessions, but there seemed to be less of these in this book and I did miss them. Some new members of the team were introduced in this book and hopefully they will grow on me as the series progresses. It is definitely good to see Glenn Branson's life progress. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good detective book and enjoys feeling part of the investigation process. All I need to do now is wait for the next one to be written.

I think all the series I read, released new books in a short spate of time leading me to realize just how many I follow. So, this is another I have followed from the beginning. Roy Grace has finally found some peace and happiness after the mysterious disappearance of his wife, Sandy, many years ago. When a young girl is reported missing he finds himself embroiled in a case that may lead back thirty years or so. He knows he is following a diabolical kilter but why he finds is so much worse than he expected.Solid police procedural, not horribly graphic so definitely not a slasher type of story. Cat and mouse chase, Grace pitting himself and his resources against a killer who thinks he is clever enough to fool the police and remain free. But is he? ARC from Netgalley.
