About this audiobook
As organizations grow in volume and complexity, the demands on leadership change. The same old moves won't cut it any more. In Chess Not Checkers, Mark Miller tells the story of Blake Brown, newly appointed CEO of a company troubled by poor performance and low morale. Nothing Blake learned from his previous roles seems to help him deal with the issues he now faces. The problem, his new mentor points out, is Blake is playing the wrong game.
The early days of an organization are like checkers: a quickly played game with mostly interchangeable pieces. Everybody, the leader included, does a little bit of everything; the pace is frenetic. But as the organization expands, you can't just keep jumping from activity to activity. You have to think strategically, plan ahead, and leverage every employee's specific talents—that's chess. Leaders who continue to play checkers when the name of the game is chess lose.
On his journey, Blake learns four essential strategies from the game of chess that transform his leadership and his organization. The result: unprecedented performance!

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I received a free copy of this book from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. This book arrived quickly and in good condition.
The best thing about this book is the fact that he has combined know how with a story. Although some of the characters will not keep you guessing there isn't anyone who will read this book and not come away with some new valuable piece of insight. This is a quick read with much information to be had. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Taming Wild Chess Openings
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I won this book in the FirstReads program of GoodReads. The opinions I share are my own :)
I'm torn about how to rate this book. The text offers good, useful frameworks for leading any organization. The text is also takes a long time to get to the point, and repeats the point a whole lot. Once I finished reading, I filled a couple pages with thoughts about how to apply these lessons to my own job, which helped make up for wading through the writing.
I'm both glad that I read this, and glad that I didn't pay for it. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I received a free copy of this book from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. This book arrived quickly and in good condition.
