- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book, Max on Life Answers and Inspiration for Today's Questions is a series of questions asked of him by his followers/fans. He has broken the book up into seven subject areas: hope, hurt, help, him/her, haves/have-nots, the hereafter, and home. Basically, each page is a question with his answer following. The way the book is structured, it's hard to just read through as a typical book. But, I don't think that's what Max Lucado intended when he wrote it. There's an index in the back of the book with subject topics and their page numbers so you can look up any particular area you may be having a problem with and go straight to the pages on which he has discussed them.Max Lucado is a popular Christian Non-Fiction author and has written numerous books. He is very knowledgeable of the bible. He quotes the bible in the majority of his answers, showing support of his views on the subject asked. However, there were answers where he just gave his opinion on the matter, and I would have preferred he had biblical quotes to support his views. The people writing him with questions are asking for answers based on biblical principles, so I feel they should always be shown where in the bible they should look. There were a few of his answers where I didn't feel the biblical quotes he referred to actually answered or pertained to the question asked. Some questions I don't feel ever were truly answered.Still, in all, Mr. Lucado tackled a large number of sensitive, hard-hitting questions with sound advice based on the bible. This is a good book for those who are confused as to how to live a Christian life in today's world, and also for those who would like to know how to answer the questions their friends ask them about Christianity.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a very encouraging book for everyone. The special writings of Max Lucado's newest book, Max On Life, offer Bible-based responses to many questions we have in our own life. Questions about disciplining kids, special needs children, struggling marriages, sex, work and finances. The one hundred fifty questions are conveniently indexed by topic and scripture to allow quick access as a reference resource. If you are looking for someone who is in your corner no matter how you perform, I think meditating on the answers in this book will reveal the Father's heart for hikers and bikers, and the cowboys and rednecks because God loves all people. Look around and ask God to show you his beautiful work of diversity all around you. His grace will give you rest and answers to some of your hard questions tugging on your heart. 5 * book and special gift book!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Vague at times, as if afraid to hurt his readers feeling or as if speaking to children who have not yet experienced real life struggles, Lucado falls short. I was somewhat disappointed with Max On Life. I came across a few questions in the book that were pretty similar to current struggles I have in my own life. Instead of feeling like I learned something or was given comfort, I felt empty. I felt Max answered many questions in this book too vaguely when he could have given more in-depth advice. It was almost like he was afraid to give the wrong answer, as if someone might get upset with the him. I kept telling myself "well lets see maybe the next question he answers will provide more insight or the next." Don't get me wrong, I like Lucado and I have a full belief in God, I just feel he could have done better. One example is a question on pornography, which Lucado answers "Just because a women dresses to lure, you don't have to look." OK, I don't know what women dressing provocatively have to do with pornography but most women who dress like his do it either because of poor self esteem and wanting to feel attractive or they had no one to teach them how to dress, plain and simple. Also he states "you are stealing glances at a woman who does not belong to you." Sorry Lucado but last time I checked my book I don't believe any woman belongs to any man, not even if they are married. What I learned on this page is that apparently Lucado thinks woman are property. Another question "My anxiety is affecting my health, family and work." Who do I turn to? Lucado answers "share your fears with others." Sorry but sharing your feelings with others does not help anxiety if it is keeping you from living your life. How about suggesting they get help from a professional? Lucado sounds like he just stepped out of a bubble he has been living in for the last 50 years with that answer. I am feeling bad giving this book a bad review, however what can I do, these are my feelings. What a shame. These people have trusted Lucado to provide insight and comfort in his answers to their questions. Whether regarding their life problems or their relationships with God. I just feel Lucado let them down. He needs to give more from his heart and provide more real life insight, even if it hurts some people. At times he seems to not even stick with the actual question at hand, almost like he lost his train of thought and never went back to correct himself. The book was not a total waste as I did find some answers. I just wished he would not have used his wife and daughter in so many examples which at times did not even make a good point to the question in reference. I think this is a book that some may find helpful if their life questions and situations are not so bad. If you feel at the end of your rope forget reading Max On Life, you will only be disappointed by his opened ended replies.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I do like Max Lucado, I have one of his small Grace books and enjoy reading it daily. I have also receive his emails and enjoy reading them. His book "Max on Life" answers 172 questions sent to him via emails, letters or asked to him in person. Each question has at least one page to itself with an answer from the writer. Most answers refer to scripture. The question themes vary from Why am I here?, Why me?, Why church?, Do we get second chances?, Who goes where? (heaven or hell), and much more. This book is a great read and a great tool to keep around for going back to questions and rereading them. I would love to get this book on my computer (or some day a reader).Oh, there are two indexes in the back of the book that I suggest you look at, great way to look up things quickly. Topical index, look up questions/answers on topics, and Scripture index.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Max Lucado’s newest book breaks from the traditional format of all of his previous books. Lucado has selected 172 questions he has been asked over the years through letters, e-mails, church, and his radio show and broken them down into seven topics: Hope, Hurt, Help, Him/Her, Have/Have-not and Hereafter. The questions range in depth from simple questions of everyday life to deeper questions of Christianity. This book is a great addition to any collection, Lucado has put together a book of questions, some of which being the questions you have been afraid to ask because you have grown up in the church and feel that people will judge you for not knowing the answer or even for asking it. Lucado once again gives each reader a lot to think about and consider through each question and answer. This book reads very conversationally filled with insight and humor Lucado responds to each question without putting the reader down or judging no matter how trivial a question may be. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5“Should I trust the advice of my non-Christian parents?”“If I’m not called to be a minister, can my life count for Christ?”“How do I teach my children humility without harming their self-esteem?”“How do I know if I’m in love?”These, in a nutshell, are just a few of the 171 questions that pastor and best-selling author Max Lucado answers in his most recent book, Max On Life: Answers and Insights to Your Most Important Questions. Unwaveringly using the Bible as foundation, Max provides answers to questions that have been asked of him via letters, emails, and even on Dunkin Donuts napkins over his 25 years of writing and ministry, adding illustrations from his life when applicable. Scripture and topical indexes are provided, allowing one to use the book as a reference.I found this book encouraging and enlightening. I love reading Max Lucado’s writing and listening to and watching his messages and this book didn’t disappoint. With his signature conversational style he delivers at times profound insights and at other times gentle reminders. He doesn’t shy away from taking a harsh tone when it is needed, but delivers most of his answers in the encouraging tone for which he is known and loved. I urge you to read this book from cover to cover because it is too good to just leave on your bookshelf to be used as reference, but I also encourage you to keep it on your shelf after its first reading to be used in times of need.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze book review bloggers program. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Max on Life by celebrated Christian author Max Lucado is nothing more than a collection of small snippets explaining Lucado’s take on various aspects of life, and it is nothing less than an incredibly inspiring explanation of Christianity. The book is dividing into seven sections; Hope, Hurt, Help, Home, Have/Have-nots, and Hearafter. Each section contains very short discussions of the questions that Lucado is most often asked in his ministry. The answers are concise, biblically based, and easy to understand. Lucado has mastered the art of turning confusing biblical topics into easy to understand, modern-day parables.I loved the structure of this book. I must admit that I tend to have ‘book-ADD’, meaning that I get bored with most books very easily, and am usually reading 2 or 3 different books at any one time. I don’t like to spend too long on any one subject or genre; I crave change and switch between books more often than I change my socks. Max on Life was perfect for me; as a collection of bite-sized essays the book didn’t focus for too long on any particular topic.Besides the structure of the book, I also loved the content! Lucado has a way of putting into words certain aspects of faith that I struggle to describe coherently. His descriptions of Heaven make me so excited to go! He reminds us that while we will face many trials on Earth, we are destined for Heaven and life’s upsets will cease to matter. This book is inspirational and informative, and all Christians, as well as those who are interested in Christianity, would benefit from reading this book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5All through life the way we learn is by asking questions. Max Lucado receives many such questions in the mail every day. Max on Life is a compilation of the most asked questions and his views on them from a Biblical standpoint. This book is broken down into different sections. I like this very much because it makes it easier if you want to read about specific things. The first section, Hope, is mainly basic questions about God. Such as does God love us, why are we here, does God have plans for us. This is the perfect section for when you are fumbling with your faith. His reassurances are wonderful and uplifting. The next section, Hurt, addresses questions about the tough times in life. Why am I sick? Why did I lose my job? Why are bad things happening to me? We all ask those questions at one point or another. Max gives us gentle reassurances that God has not abandoned us during those times. The third section, Help, is about living a prayerful life. God can not help us unless we open up and ask him in. It is through prayer that we can ask God for his help or just talk to him to help ourselves. Him/Her is all about relationships, love, and sex. How do we find the one that God put on this planet for us? How do we as a couple live our lives to fulfill God’s plans? Is premarital sex ok? These are very tough questions that Max lends a hand in answering.Home contains the knowledge to help you deal with the everyday struggles you deal with in your home life. You know those petty little disagreements you get into with your spouse? The ones that you can’t believe you actually argued over? Well, Max’s wisdom and knowledge of the Bible can help you make it through the day.Haves/Have-Nots deals with jobs and money. How do you deal with things when your financial burdens are more then you can handle? Through teachings of the Bible, you will get pointed in the right direction. And finally, Hereafter deals with the age old question of where we go when we die. Max discusses the matters of Heaven and Hell. How do we get to Heaven? Is Hell truly eternal? This is one of those great books that you want to keep around for reference. There is even a great index in the back if you are looking for something on a really specific topic. In conjunction with the Wakela's World Disclosure Statement, I received a product in order to enable my review.
