About this audiobook
It was just another after-work happy-hour bar downtown, where business professionals unwound with a few drinks, complained about the boss, maybe hooked up with someone for the night. Until something went terribly wrong. At first it was just a friction in the air. The noise intensified. The crowd seemed oppressive. Some sharp words were exchanged, some pushing and shoving.
Then the madness descended. And after twelve minutes of chaos and violence, eighty people lay dead.
Eve Dallas is trying to sort out the inexplicable events. Surviving witnesses talk about seeing things - monsters and swarms of bees. They describe sudden, overwhelming feelings of fear and rage and paranoia. When forensics makes its report, the mass delusions make more sense: it appears the bar patrons were exposed to a cocktail of chemicals and illegal drugs that could drive people into temporary insanity - if not kill them outright.
But that doesn't explain who would unleash such horror - or why. Eve's husband, Roarke, happens to own the bar, yet he's convinced the attack wasn't directed at him. It's bigger than that. And if Eve can't figure it out fast, it could happen again, anytime, anywhere. Because it's airborne. . . .

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Man, this one grabbed me. The method of the murders is freaking scary, and I'm sorta surprised they decided to release it on 9/11. I think Robb did a great job of capturing that imminent tension that existed here during that time period, that sort of terrifying anticipation for something you hope will never come.
This book focused more on the mystery and would probably do fairly well as a stand-alone. Past cases are name-dropped, especially Loyalty in Death and New York to Dallas, but it's easy enough to gather meaning from the context. There are no big new character developments, although there are some heartfelt scenes featuring Summerset.
On a personal note, Eve mentions, as a throwaway, forwarding information to Kyung (NYPD's media liaison) and I suddenly started shipping Nadine & Kyung. I don't know why, I just did. They've never had a scene together, but they obviously know each other (Nadine mentions talking to the media liaison on pg. 102) and it just made my brain start tingling.
While I really enjoyed Celebrity in Death, there has been a bit of sameness wafting around the series so Robb does need to inject it with something new. After 35 books, there aren't a lot of new places to take it and I'll be interested to see what, if anything, Robb settles on.
