“This quilt was inspired by some old hand-pieced, but unfinished, quilts and samples. The hexie tops have been sewn by hand without the papers that tend to be associated with this shape. For me, cutting out the paper basting stage gave me a hand-piecing project that needed minimum equipment. The scrappy nature of the main rosettes also meant that it could be quite mindlessly stitched with no worry about patterns or fussy-cutting.

“The colour scheme was inspired by a fabric bundle of Janet Clare’s collection, The Wordsmith, which I adore. I paired it with scraps from my stash and scattered the collection throughout the rosettes. Although I’ve stated thirty-one fabrics in the requirements, you can use a lot more than this – the more the merrier. Take thirty-one as a starting point, but use as many
