About this series

So, you want to stay at the top of the curve on Electric Cars. Well, the trend is actually moving beyond cars. The trend is going in two directions - public transportation and personal electric vehicles - e-bikes, etc. Often these are combined with people riding their e-bike to the bus or train, then riding on public transportation, then finishing their ride on their e-bike. This book is about Personal Electric Vehicles.

Personal Electric Vehicles are all about you. They're what you would be if you were an Electric Vehicle. So, I call them IEV, with an emphasis on I, for short.

There are all sorts of IEVs - Cycles with one, two or three wheels and varying speeds; skateboard in various configurations including hoverboards, watercraft, and VTOL - vertical takeoff and landing. I also include micro cars, atvs, farm equipment, and warehouse vehicles.

I've included an evaluation cheat sheet to help you do research before you buy. I give you the specs on the top models in each category. And, I try not to make it too boring, though everyone's eyes will probably gloss over some of the numbers.

There's something in this book for everyone. Even me, who's afraid to ride on a motorcycle, especially one that goes over 200mph. I list my choices and the pros and cons of going this route. In the end, the decision will be yours. Will you jump on this edge of the Electric Vehicle curve or not? It will help save the Earth. And it might save your wallet.

My Toyota Echo is rated at 36mpg for the average driver. I can get 43mpg. Some people only get 25mpg in their Echo. Techniques for getting better gas mileage are called hypermiling. In this book, I discuss 13 hypermiling techniques. I also discuss how to calculate gas mileage so you can tell how your mileage is improving as you apply some or all of these techniques. Just think, now you'll have a few extra bucks to buy a lottery ticket, a flower for a special friend, a soda or a stick of gum for yourself, or a bottle of bubbles for your kid. Perhaps you'll save it to tip your favorite wait person a little extra. You might even stick it in your bank account to help pay bills. I've been following advances in Electric Cars for nearly 50 years and advances in Hybrids for 15. I started following Electric Cars while writing a paper in History Class in 7th grade on current events. I started following Hybrids when the Honda Insight was released in 1999. I also started following Fuel Cell Cars about that same time. The Xybrid expands on Hybrid technologies, discussing new, potential, and conceptual technologies. If you're interested in cars, and especially if you're interested in Hybrids and Electric Cars, then this book is for you, whether you understand how cars work or not. An electric car is often referred to as an electric vehicle or EV. In Select Your Electric Car, I explore the various options of EVs available in the United States. If you live in California or in one of the other states which have similar zero emission vehicle standards, you will have more choices. These states have laws that car companies selling cars in their state must provide a certain percentage of EVs. I am going to focus on the EVs which are widely available in the US now (2018). I'll compare them, so that hopefully you will be able to purchase the EV which fits your lifestyle - or the lifestyle which you plan to adopt once you own an EV. I'll also look at a few other EVs which are not as widely available. In 2019, car dealers will be offering more models of EVs nationally, at least that's the plan. I'm thinking that you might want a car with more of a track record. So I won't be saying as much about those models, though I will mention them. In 2018, the US ranked seventh in number of EVs sold, following China, United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Netherlands, and Norway who is at number one. If you wanted to wait until 2022 to drive your EV, and you had 200,000 dollars to spare, and you had a commercial driver's license (CDL) or could hire a driver who did; why not just purchase a Tesla Electric Semi. After all, Elon Musk is now saying it will have a 600-mile range. Even if he's only 75 percent correct, that's still a 450-mile range. I could drive into town (Olympia) every day of the week and up to the big city (Seattle) on the weekend. And I still wouldn't have to charge my rig. And in Aug 2018, a Tesla Semi made it from Coast to Coast across the US. It did have to be recharged. But the driver was able to find charging stations which were powerful enough to charge it. But where would I park the thing? Besides I don't have a CDL. And the few people I know who do aren't interested in being my personal chauffeur. I also definitely don't have 200,000 dollars that I can afford to spend on my next vehicle. I won't talk about the Tesla Semi in this book. You can hear about that vehicle in my book - The Xybrid Vehicle. I'll also mention techniques for driving an EV which will expand their range. At least these techniques work when driving my 2015 Electric Nissan Leaf.

Previously, I covered Electric Cars which were available in the US. In my new book, I decided to cover the world. I also venture into Electric Planes and EVTOLS - Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing machines. Even though EVs are very interesting, you might get bored after the 100th or so. To relieve your boredom, I inserted stories about my visits from a couple of outer space aliens who are very interested in Electric Cars. Who says you can't mix research books with sci-fi and humor? I start with the most popular EVs. I cover many parts of the globe. And I cover lesser known Electric cars. Some places around the world don't have good roads or the roads are too crowded. There, electric motorcycles, rickshaws, and other vehicles are more popular than electric cars. And did you know that there's an electric skateboard? Electric Cars come in several models - Sedans, SUVs, Crossovers, Hatchbacks, etc. There are even little electric bubble cars. And there's a Amphibious E-Tricycle Camper. Now is a good time to get into an EV - there's availability. You'll get good range. And you'll save money on gas and maintenance. Besides, bans on ICE vehicles (internal combustion engine - petrol powered cars) are coming. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon. And supermost of all, owning an EV is cool and the wave of the future. And you want to get into the action now because you want to ride the crest of the wave. Some people are still worried about - what happens if the battery dies. I cover that. Good news - not a problem. I also cover converting your car to an EV (or rather hiring someone to do that for you) and EV Rentals. I conclude the book with what it would take to own an EV Dealership, My EV choices, and statements by World Leaders on EVs. I evaluate the more popular cars and provide a blank evaluation form so you can make your own evaluations. This book is packed with information, but I keep it light so you won't get bored. Actually, that's not true. I kept it light so that I wouldn't get bored.
