Description

We are now in Tehilim pasuk 16,9 לָכֵ֤ן שָׂמַ֣ח לִ֭בִּי וַיָּ֣גֶל כְּבוֹדִ֑י אַף־בְּ֝שָׂרִ֗י יִשְׁכֹּ֥ן לָבֶֽטַח Therefore, my heart was happy. My honor (which refers to the soul), was elated and my flesh will also dwell in serenity. What is this Therefore referring to? The pasuk before this says, שִׁוִּ֬יתִי יְהֹוָ֣ה לְנֶגְדִּ֣י תָמִ֑יד כִּ֥י מִֽ֝ימִינִ֗י בַּל־אֶמּֽוֹט I place Hashem opposite me at all times, He never leaves my right side. So David Hamelech is telling us the secret for his simcha and elation . What is it that makes him happy and elated ? It's the fact that he places Hashem opposite him at all times. There are a few nuances in this. The Malbim asks about the terms Samach/happiness and Gil/elation . He says the difference between simcha and Gil is that simcha/happiness is something that's constant. And Gil is something that comes from a surprise, like an unexpected gift or some something new that you didn't know about- that brings Gil . He says, Lachen Samach Libi/Therefore my heart was happy refers to physical needs. That's a constant happiness. David Hamelech says, Because I place Hashem opposite me, my physical needs are always taken care of and that brings me a constant happiness. Yagel Kevodi refers to spiritual accomplishments where there's an aspect of hiddush/newness . That's the meaning of Gil - there are constantly new spiritual highs that I reach due to my reliance on Hashem. The Chida explains that if a person doesn't have bitachon, it's very hard for him to focus on what he's doing. He's full of worries, he's full of concerns. But the pasuk says Shiviti Hashem, using God's name of mercy , showing that I know God's is going to have mercy on me. He's going to take care of me. Therefore, I'm focused on what I need to do. I'm consistent. I don't falter. And that brings me success both physically and spiritually. Samach Libi/ my heart is happy refers to my physical needs and desires which are fulfilled . And Yagel kevodi refers to my spiritual needs that are fulfilled as well . The question is, how do you place Hashem opposite you at all times? The Chida, in his sefer Homat Anak gives us a novel (and not simple) way of reading the pasuk . He says that David Hamelech is called, The one that established the yoke. At the time, 100 people were dying every day. When David Hamelech instituted one hundred daily blessings, that stopped the disease. And the word על , yoke has a numerical value of 100. That is the 100 blessings that David Hamelech instituted. He adds that the Rokeach tells us that there are 100 blessings we say every single day. Two of them are from the Torah, Birkat HaMazon and Birkat Hatorah . The other 98 are rabbinical. Those 98 blessings get rid of the 98 curses of the rebuke that comes in Parashat Kitavo (double 49 is is 98, 2 sets of seven times seven). David Hamelech is telling us that recognizing Hashem in our daily berachot 100 times will place Hashem opposite me. Every time I eat, Baruch Atah Hashem, every time I use the facilities, Baruch Atah Hashem. 100 Baruch Atah Hashems is how I place Hashem opposite me. And that's how I strengthen my bitachon. The Chida finds a hint for this in the word לכן Lachen/ Therefore , which has a numerical value if 100 ( ל lamed is 30, כ chaf is 20 and ן nun is 50). The 100 blessings I say every day is what puts Hashem opposite me at all times. Baruch Atah Hashem יה-וה . Every single day, every time I eat, I remind myself of Hashem’s mercy and kindness and therefore I rely on Him. I focus on what I need to do and I see success, both physically and spiritually. That's David Hamelech’s secret of Lachen Samach Libi. And not only that, but the pasuk says, even after I pass away the 100 berachot that I say every day, the constant recognition of Hashem, will bring me protection in the grave as well. So David Hamelech has given us the secret of Shiviti Hashem L’Negdi Talmid- I place Hashem before me always- it comes from our 100 blessings a day, which strength
