Description

We are going through pesukim of bitachon. We are now up to Mishleh 10,9 הוֹלֵ֣ךְ בַּ֭תֹּם יֵ֣לֶךְ בֶּ֑טַח וּמְעַקֵּ֥שׁ דְּ֝רָכָ֗יו יִוָּדֵֽעַ׃ One who walks in innocence will walk securely, and the one who perverts his ways will be broken, (or will become known). Rabbenu Yonah says that one who walks in Temimut/ innocence is one who does not put aside his innocence even when in a challenging situation in business. Sometimes when people are challenged in business, they start feeling the need to cut corners, to start yelling and screaming, or leave the straight path. But this man does not do that. He does not give up his innocence because he's afraid of losing out to his competition. He doesn’t start using improper tactics or cunning in his business. He doesn't start screaming and yelling. He keeps his cool. And obviously in the end things will work out, as we will soon see. On the other hand, as the Mishleh always presents a contrast, the man that says, “ No, I am going to be stubborn. I'm going to leave my path of innocence because I have to win.. ” this man who’s trying to protect himself will become known , as Rabbenu Yonah explains. He’ll be found out. People will start picking up on the fact that he gave up hope. The competition, or whoever you're negotiating with, can pick up on when you lose your confidence. Therefore, the man that now takes things into his own hands, it's discernible that he's nervous and not as confident as he was. So therefore, the bitachon itself makes you successful, because people can see your confidence, which causes you to be successful. There's a beautiful story told about a Jewish man who was on a boat with a very expensive jewel that he was taking to a place where they would appreciate this jewel. He didn't have money to pay for the boat ride, so he showed the captain of the ship the beautiful jewel and told him that when he gets to the port, he'll sell it and repay his fare. The captain of the ship trusted this man. Very nice. It was a monthlong boat ride, during which they became friendly and enjoyed each other's company. The Jewish fellow was just so thrilled, looking forward to his fortune. He would pull out the jewel and look at it while he ate. He upgraded himself to a first class cabin, and had his meals served to him, while staring at his jewel. But then he fell asleep in his room, and the waiter came in and cleaned up the table. And the waiter does not realize that the jewel was on the table, and he wrapped up the tablecloth, and threw it into the garbage. When the man woke up, he realized what happened. In those days, there was no garbage. They would just throw the tablecloth, with the crumbs, into the sea. He was lost. What would he do now? What would the captain do to him? But he decided he would keep his bitachon. He would walk in innocence, and he'll walk securely. So, he continued on the boat, talking to the captain with the same confidence and the same feeling of strength and wealth that had before, not showing any sign of change. And as they got closer to the dock, obviously the Jew should be more nervous. But he kept his cool and his composure. The captain said, “ I have this boat that's full of wheat, it's my wheat, and I don't want to have to pay taxes. Would you mind if I put the wheat in your name? Since you are not a citizen of this town, you won't have the same taxes as me.” The Jew agreed and all the wheat was put in the Jew’s name. When he gets to the town, the first thing the captain does is go off to the local bar. He gets into a brawl and gets killed. And now all the wheat is owned by the Jew. If the Jew would've lost his confidence and his reliance, he would've definitely admitted, “ I'm lost. I don't know what to do,” and he would've lost everything. But because he kept confident and upbeat, the captain continued to trust him and gave him everything. And in the end, he got even more than the value of the jewel, in that boatload of wheat. So that's our lesson on t
