Description

We are in Tehilim 37,5. גל על ה׳ דרכך ובטח עליו והוא יעשה Commit your ways to Hashem. Rely on Him and He will do. The simple explanation of Gol as we're using it, is to commit , but the Mahril Diskin, in his commentary on Chumash Bereshit, 41,1 explains with the famous Midrash that says, Fortunate is the one that relies on Hashem, that’s Yosef. He didn't turn arrogant, he told the Sar Hamashkim, ‘Remember me,’ and two years were added . Everyone is bothered by this Midrash because it starts by praising Yosef, Fortunate is the one that's like Yosef , but then it says he got two years added to his sentence. But the Maharil Diskin explains with an extremely important principle in bitachon. He says there are three approaches to bitachon: Approach number one is one extreme, which he calls Bitachon Gamur / absolute reliance , which means you have zero reliance on yourself, like King Hizkiyahu, who said, “ I'm going to go to sleep and Hashem, You fight the war.” That's one extreme. The other extreme is Bitachon im Ma’aseh / Bitachon with an action , as the pasuk says, I'll bless everything you do. You do something to the end, and you rely on Hashem to send Beracha to your work. Those are two extremes- doing nothing or being fully involved. Then, he says, when I have a seeming contradiction, the third pasuk comes and resolves the seeming contradiction, and the third pasuk is our pasuk, גל על ה׳ דרכך ובטח עליו והוא יעשה He says the word Gol means to roll . You can give a ball a full fledged kick, or you could just give it a little punt and allow it to roll. It’s just a little activity. Maybe the ball will roll, maybe it'll stop. We don't know. That's the middle level of bitachon. It’s one phone call to the Shadchan, not 10 calls a day. One phone call is a little push. The first approach is no phone calls. I'm going to sit at home and wait for the shadchan to call. The opposite approach is, I'll call the shadchan once a week. And the middle approach is, I call the shadchan once. I give it a little push and that's it. That was what Yosef did. He wasn't totally quiet, and he also didn't push too much. He just said, “ Please remember me. ” As in, ‘ By the way, You're getting out of jailC and if you’re there and it happens to come up, please remember me.’ But I'm not giving it an extra push. The Sar Hamashkim might have thought Yosef was doing pretty good in jail. He was the chief of the jail and everything was under his control. He wasn’t going to make it look like he was desperate to get out. And what happened two years later? Paroah had a dream, and the Sar Hamashkim finally said, “ Oh yes, I remember that guy was translate the dream s.” This happened at the right time, on Rosh Hashanah, when the seven years of plenty were starting. So, immediately, the whole world saw how smart Yosef was. But what would have happened if Yosef hadn’t taken that approach? What if he would've put his full emphasis on the Sar Hamashkim, and begged and pleaded with him to get him out immediately? Had he gotten out immediately, what would Yosef have done? Paroah didn't have the dream yet. That wasn't coming for another two years. It wasn't the right time yet. Yosef would've gone back to Canaan with his brothers and the whole story never would've happened. That's what the midrash means: Fortunate is the one that relies on Hashem like Yosef, that took the middle ground. We're praising Yosef. This is not a negative. This is a beautiful, happy ending. This is the right way to go. Yosef took the middle approach. He didn't go with the extreme, which would've gotten him out immediately, but wouldn’t be good. He wouldn't have done nothing at all, because not everyone's holding there. YouIf wanted to show us how to act. This, says the Maharil Diskin, is the secret in this pasuk. Gol comes from the root Galgal / to roll. Gol Al Hashem Darkecha. Make believe your life, or your challenge, is a little ball, and give it a little push. Let the rest happen on its own. Hashem
