Description

EPISODE 172 - Clark and John welcome back Will to the podcast to fill in for Hyung. To open the show, they first discuss the news that LeBron James is signing autographs for Topps/Fanatics again. They also give their initial reaction on seeing the dual autograph 1/1 card featuring LeBron with his son Bronny.
Also off the top, the guys talk about Shohei Ohtani and where he could possibly land in MLB free agency, and what team would boost his value the most in the hobby.
Next for Hobby Headlines, they share how set collecting on a budget can be a good way to keep active in the hobby while the state of the market and economy are down. Some creative ways to set collect including PCing your favorite player and going after each of the parallels within a particular set. Or to collect players from your home team within a subset (ie. Blank Slate cards.)
Then afterwards, the guys brainstorm ideas to make the hobby more fun or better in the "Just A Thought" segment. One idea includes introducing a "pizzafractor" with a game plan on how collectors could win pizza for life. Another is to return base cards to an LCS for store credit (not unlike the bottle return system at liquor stores.)
Lastly, they play their regular "Pick 1" segment where they are given two players or cards and subsequently debate which one they would rather invest in. John puts up three Canadian hockey player cards vs. three U.S.A. hockey player cards; Will asks whether it's better to invest in a 1/1 card in a non-rookie year vs. a limited card in a rookie year within a mid-tier set. Then Clark asks whether it's better to buy the cheaper 2023 Topps Update hobby box or go for the more expensive 2023 Topps Chrome Update hobby box.
