Description
Some people say you should use it, some people say you should avoid it. Georgie and Pierce, however, think that social media is a vital tool for creating a network that can provide you work. Establishing yourself within the online acting community is a good way of ensuring that you are at the forefront of people’s mind when they are accessing their mental Rolodex for roles. Georgie and Pierce share their tips and no-no’s for showcasing and advertising yourself to the people that make those all important decisions.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
On your social media profile you can showcase a more truthful and well rounded version of yourself than on a casting profile. People hire people.
Email alone can be a difficult format to stand out from the crowd with. Social media formats allow much more outward expression and individuality.
When using TikTok, try to build a following that allows you to live stream as this creates the best connection.
With Instagram and TikTok you can post one piece of content to both formats doubling your audience. Film a self-tape of you performing a copyright free monologue in portrait mode to both apps.
Be careful about what you post on social media. Don’t rant. If people see you as difficult they will not hire you.
If you have a social media following you have an audience that you can advertise your project that you are working on, and this is attractive to directors.
BEST MOMENTS
‘It doesn’t have to be all about acting. That’s what your casting profiles are for.’ – Georgie
‘We have so many people out there saying ‘you should only email because its really professional’ and that sort of thing, but emailing is black text on a white background in your Gmail inbox. It’s so impersonal, it’s just generic, it’s really difficult to stand out from the crowd when you’re emailing.’ – Pierce
‘We tend to recommend that the two platforms you use as an actor are Instagram and TikTok because, to be fair, they work in very similar ways.’ – Pierce
‘For the love of all things holy, do not get caught in the Twitter feed. Don’t do it. There are so many things that are annoying as actors, or annoying about the industry but please do not get caught in the trap of posting every single minor inconvenience that’s happened to you as an actor.’ – Georgie
‘You are the only brand out there that is you specifically, so just because you’re not getting hired for the massive things doesn’t meant that you can’t start your social media journey now and start aiming at those stepping stone roles.’ – Pierce
