Description
Georgie and Pierce explain how you can live alongside an acting career with everything else in your life and give you a few tips on how to live your life with a little bit of balance. As a working actor you are going to need time and money to feed yourself and wash your smalls, but sometimes the whirlwind of acting and daily work can become all encompassing, so here’s some hints on how to keep it all (relatively) under control.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
For actors, a relaxing evening watching TV can mean a busman’s holiday on the sofa planning how to break in to the programs they are , or studying the onscreen performances.
Every actor when starting out needs a day job, that is a fact. Good acting jobs take a long time to come so you will need money for living in the meantime and many actors live quite happily working 9 to 5 and acting as well. Only two percent of actors make over 20k a year in acting.
You do not have to do free work but it all adds up to experience, networking and potential material for your showreel. Supporting artist work can also be good experience and you do get paid.
Schedule your days and understand what is actually going on with your time. This is the way you can move your day jobs and acting jobs around each other efficiently.
A potential difficulty can be relationships with people not involved in acting who earn regular wages and have regular work. You are also going to bring a bit of your characters home with you.
BEST MOMENTS
‘You’re always on, always thinking should I be doing this? Should I be doing that? I might be able to do this with my time instead. There is no off switch.’ – Pierce
‘For a lot of actors, it may not be a case of “blowing up”. Its may be a case of you work consistently. I know actors who have been doing it for 20 plus years. They haven’t necessarily got their break but they’re content because they’re working.’ – Georgie
‘I know personally I’ve worked on projects before that haven’t been paid but I’ve looked at the script and gone ‘wow, this adds value in so many other ways’, whether it’s personal value or value to the viewer.’ – Georgie
‘“Oh, ok you’re and actor but what’s your real job?” Or another absolute classic, and this tends to come from family members or close friends, is “oh, can’t you just email the BBC and ask to be in a project or something?”’ – Pierce
‘You’re going to be experiencing new emotions, new feelings, new anxieties with each job that you do.’ – Georgie
