The Cleveland Guardians lost another game and maybe lost a starter as well. We focus on what options they could have in terms of starters despite all the great prospects the starter depth near the majors is limited. We also talk about the Guardians losing today’s game as I am recording as the ninth inning starts. While it is likely Konnor Pilkington would fill in for Civale but we discuss other options Joey Cantillo, Logan Allen, Xzavion Curry, and Peyton Battenfield. We also dig into the starting pitching in general for the Guardians this year.

We then get into the details of the loss today against the Chicago White Sox. It was a tighter game than it had any right to be after the injury to Aaron Civale. We talk about the good, every pitcher not named Hentges. The Guardians managed five hits and two of them were by Amed Rosario. It was not a great offensive day, and the Guardians dropped the series to the Chicago White Sox who are now just a half-game back. The Guardians are a game below .500 and will face the Tigers who swept the Guardians the last time they met.

We get into what has gone wrong for Sam Hentges and the overall answer is that there have been a lot of factors that have led to him giving up a run in eight of his last nine appearances. He is getting hit more often, walking more hitters, and giving up more line drives and fly balls. He was lucky early on, and unlucky a bit now but the question becomes is the middle ground going to be achievable or will there always be these ups and downs. Then we get into some of the top performers in the minors. At some point, we might all need to reevaluate Will Benson who has been left off the 40-man two years in a row but has changed his approach and has been one of the most productive players in the minors but not the most that title belongs to Bo Naylor who has had a massive rebound after a rough 2021. We also talk about recent draft pick Jake Fox, standing out for his production at the midway mark.
