Description
Change has turned into a key story line for University of Texas athletics since the start of 2020, starting with the football side of the equation.
Texas head coach Tom Herman has officially completed his coaching staff after spending the last two and a half months searching for his next wave of coaches. The Longhorns have since introduced the seven new assistants in defensive coordinator Chris Ash, offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, wide receivers coach Andre Coleman, tight ends and special teams coach Jay Boulware, defensive line coach Mark Hagen, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler and cornerbacks coach Jay Valai who are tasked with doing every necessary to help Texas football take the next step during Year 4 of the Herman era.
But football aside, further changes could be headed towards the Forty Acres upon completion of the spring semester as it pertains to the leadership of Texas men's basketball.
On the latest episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes open the show with a rundown of some of the latest happenings in Texas sports, including Texas Softball's hot 10-0 start to the season.
Chip and Taylor turn their focus to Texas football as the Longhorns look to revamp the defense under new defensive coordinator Chris Ash. Two key changes on D will come up front with the Longhorns' transition to a four-down front with the D-line now being led by two coaches with Oscar Giles focusing on the ends and former Indiana DC Mark Hagen taking over the defensive tackles.
With Hagen being the final member to join Herman's staff, The Flagship went to the experts for the inside scoop on what Texas has added with the Hagen hire in an exclusive interview with Indiana beat writer for Peegs.com, Matt Weaver, who has covered Hagen for a number of years and holds a special relationship with the Longhorns' new defensive line coach.
Chip and Taylor close the show with a topic on the minds of many Texas fans: What on earth is happening with Texas basketball?
Shaka Smart and the Longhorns are struggling down the stretch of Big 12 play and could miss the NCAA Tournament, which would mark the third time in five years and the second-straight season Texas failed to nab a tournament bid. The on-going issues has led many to believe change is headed for the program. Chip gives his take on what he's hearing about a potential change at the top of Texas hoops, and gives some names of candidates to keep an eye on in the event that Texas AD Chris Del Conte decides to make a head coaching.
