Description

The search for the next wave of Longhorn assistant coaches is nearing a close as Texas head coach Tom Herman — who made the decision to replace both of his coordinators, in addition to a handful of assistants — looks to complete the hiring process as soon as possible. In his search to replace seven assistant coaches, Herman has successfully filled six of the open positions with his hiring of offensive coordinator and QB coach Mike Yurcich, wide receivers coach Andre Coleman, tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Jay Boulware, defensive coordinator and safeties coach Chris Ash, linebackers coach and co-DC Coleman Hutzler and cornerbacks coach Jay Valai.
After Ash made the decision to only keep defensive line coach Oscar Giles from former DC Todd Orlando's 2019 defensive staff (and did not retain co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Craig Naivar and cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator Jason Washington), Texas has interviewed a number of candidates to potentially fill the remaining spot on the defensive staff. However, the Longhorns have yet to complete the process and Herman and Ash continue their search to fill the vacant position as the second defensive line assistant.
On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes open the show to discuss the recent coaching additions to Herman's staff and what on Earth is going on with Shaka Smart and the Texas basketball program, before bringing in Horns247 publisher Bobby Burton to talk all things Texas football. We are then joined by special guest and former Texas Football player Norm Watkins — who was also the roommate of newly hired TE coach Jay Boulware — for an in-depth look into what the Longhorns are gaining in the decision to add Boulware to Herman's 2020 coaching staff.
Chip and Taylor wrap up the show with their tailgate takeaways, including Chip's take on the Longhorns getting ready to play and coach in Super Bowl LIV.
