The University of Miami has hired legendary running back Alonzo Highsmith as GM of football operations. He will work directly with head coach Mario Cristobal to support all administrative functions of the football program and will serve as a liaison between football and the administration, and between former Miami players and staff. He will also assist with scouting and roster assessment and supervise NFL relations.
Host Alex Donno argues that this is a perfect hire on paper. Highsmith has been working in NFL front offices as a scout and assistant GM for 2 decades, most notably with the Green Bay Packers and most recently with the Seattle Seahawks. As college football becomes more and more like the NFL, it makes perfect sense for big programs like The U to run their operations more like an NFL team. Highsmith also checks off the boxes that come with being a Hurricanes legend, but for all of his qualifications, this is much more than just a figurehead position!
Donno also recalls a story shared by UM booster Dan Lambert, who wanted Highsmith to arrive in a similar position three years ago. So why is it happening now and not back then?
