Description
Today we’re going to talk about the huge connection between vitamin D and autoimmune diseases.
The thymus gland is an immune gland that produces a very specific T cell called the T regulatory cell or T suppressor cell. One of the main jobs of this important T cell is to prevent autoimmune diseases.
An autoimmune disease is tissue that has antibodies against itself. It’s an inappropriate immune response.
One of the main functions of a T regulatory cell is something called central tolerance—tolerating the body tissue and not attacking it.
A big function of the thymus gland is determining the self from a foreign enemy or pathogen. If it finds an immune cell that’s going to self-attack, it will execute it.
The T regulatory cell:
• Inhibits inappropriate autoimmune responses
• Is being used as a treatment in certain autoimmune diseases
If you don’t have the T regulatory cell function, your risk for allergies, asthma, and miscarriage goes up.
T regulatory cells majorly need vitamin D. A vitamin D deficiency can also potentially cause a miscarriage or other problems with the baby, because of how vitamin D feeds this T cell.
If you have an autoimmune disease, you may want to consider taking high amounts of vitamin D, because vitamin D is an anti-inflammatory nutrient. T regulatory cells are anti-inflammatory as well. They are also immunosuppressive—they keep the immune system in balance.
