Dr. Berg talks about water retention weight gain on the ketogenic diet. Water retention is an excessive buildup of fluid in the circulatory system. Several causes of water retention includes, low B1, low potassium, fiber, high salt and consuming too much carbs. You are not going to gain actual fat on keto (Ketogenic Diet), it is mainly water weight.
Possible Cause of Water Retention:
• Low in Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) – Vitamin B1 deficiencies will create fluid retention and edema in the ankles. Add nutritional yeast in your diet.
• Low Potassium – By not consuming enough vegetables. But if you are consuming a lot of vegetables and still have fluid retention, it’s because you can’t digest all the fiber and that it is too much for the microorganism that you have. Potassium source must be from the leafy greens and it is needed to push out the fluids.
Two Types of Fiber: Soluble and Insoluble – Both will retain fluid in water.
• Fiber – It is a hidden source of fluid retention. It retains fluid and the body will demand fluid to bulk up to make the stool form and go through the system.
• High Salt
• Carbs Too High – Consuming too many carbs because carbohydrates retain fluid.
