    CHAPTER 1

    Good Morning Greeting

Good morning, Kevin. I wonder if you could do me a large favor. I need to go to the hospital. I fell down my front steps, and I’m afraid I have broken my right ankle and can’t drive myself there. I would really appreciate your help. Thanks.

Have you put ice on it yet? asked Kevin.

I have it on now, said Jackie. Let me try and put my shoes on, and I should be there in a few minutes, said Jackie.

Use the crutches that are in the front hall closet, so you don’t have to walk on it, said Kevin.

Thanks. I’ll see you soon, said Jackie.

Oh, by the way. Take something for the pain before we go, so it can keep the swelling down, said Kevin.

The rest of the day was a blur for Jackie until she met Dr. Tom. He had asked her how it happened, and she had told him she had fallen down her front steps because she wasn’t looking where she was going.

Did I break it? Jackie was hoping it was just a bad sprain.

Yes, you did, and we can’t do anything until the swelling goes down. It will require surgery to reconstruct it, so I would like to keep you in the hospital until it is done. Just keep it elevated and ice it for ten minutes every hour. Let my nurse, Robin, know if you need anything else. Did you take anything for the pain and swelling before you came in today? asked Dr. Tom.

"Yes, I took some Extra Strength Tylenol about an hour ago," replied Jackie.

Do you have any other questions for me? asked Dr. Tom.

Could you ask Kevin to come in, so I can tell him what is going on? Thanks, asked Jackie.

I’m not going anywhere until I know you are okay, said Kevin.

Thanks, but I’ll be fine, said Jackie.

I’m still going to stay, and that’s the end of it, Jackie. I love you, and I want to be sure you’re safe. End of discussion, said Kevin.

A few days passed, and the surgery was a success. Jackie was in the recovery room. She was coming out of anesthetic. She was given Pepsi to drink. She looked down at the bright orange cast on her right leg from above the knee down to her toes. When she looked up, she saw Dr. Tom.

How are you feeling? he asked.

"I’m not sure yet, but I do like the bright orange cast. What made you choose that color?

"I remember you said once that you liked bright colors, so I chose the brightest color I could find. I hope you
