If there were no race directors, media support, or volunteers, no running race could hope to be successful. So it is with a book. Without input and skilled help, this book would continue to sit in a notebook on a shelf collecting dust. Although each person listed has received personal thanks, public knowledgement is just as important. They are the ones who made this book a reality.
It was Diane who offered encouragement with the initial idea and format style. Kathy and Kari gave honest editing and input, along with asking questions for clarification. Gina and Ellen rescued this primary computer skilled author. That's easy
or no big deal
were their responses when putting everything in its needed form for the the publisher. Thanks to Malerie and her skills as a photographer for the book cover body profile. My public library was the go-to place to write, research, and email. And finally, Ariel, Linda, and Chandra at Faith Publishing Company cannot receive enough praise and thanks. They were nothing but encouraging, helpful, and patient with this first-time author. Well done to all!
Introduction
Sports were just a natural part of my growing up. I feel fortunate to have grown up in a generation without computers, mobile phones, social media, and with restricted TV watching. Much of our free time was playing outdoors. My dad—who coached football, track, and basketball—often took my siblings and me to the high school with him on Sunday afternoons. We had free reign of the school, playing on the trampoline, having scooter races down the hallways, shooting baskets, and any other games we could come up with.
Summer involved swimming as Mom took us to the pool several days a week. In high school and college, it was tennis. After a shoulder injury, I went back to cycling and swimming, and it was then when triathlons became the new rage that I began to incorporate running into my workouts. I confess, I disliked running for quite a while, and it never came easy for me. But I began to develop a love for the sport, and it has been a significant part of my life for many decades. It is through the years of experience and studying the Bible in which I began to see many analogies of running compared to life and specifically the Christian life.
A lesser-known book in the Bible named Habakkuk has a verse that served as one of my motivations for writing this devotional book. Verse 2 of chapter 2 says, Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others
(NLT). I write no new revelation or scripture but stories, insights, and applications. Wherever God has placed us and in whatever activities we are involved in and whatever our circumstances, God can use them in our lives to share the good news of Jesus Christ. It is from this perspective I share not only my experiences but references from the Bible that include others in our marathon of faith, the race set before us by God Himself.
If you already have made a decision to give your allegiance to Jesus Christ as the Lord of your life, may this devotional book be an encouragement. And if you have never placed your trust in Him, I pray God would use this book to convict you to follow Jesus and begin your marathon of life.

Meeting the Qualifications
Some people have the misconception that only fast runners are allowed to enter a marathon. This may be true for some races, such as the Boston Marathon and the Olympics. But the majority of marathons are open to anyone who has a desire to tackle the 26.2-mile course. There are no restrictions regarding age, gender, profession, social status, or ethnicity. There is even a category for wheelchairs. In addition to anyone participating, marathons are easily accessible nowadays
