    Read

The title of this message is Whosoever Will. I’m going to explain why I believe the Bible teaches whosoever will. There are some people who believe differently, and I’m not trying to pick a fight or set us apart from other churches. Instead, I want us to come together as Christ’s body.

The reason I say that is because I’m going to talk about Calvinism and Arminianism. John Calvin lived in the early 1500s. Jacob Arminius lived in the late 1500s. Some people label others as Calvinists or Arminiests, but I don’t want to be branded like that. I follow Christ. But I need to talk about the five points of Calvinism so I can explain why I believe whosoever will.

Some people get angry when others disagree about this topic, and that very fact should show us there could be something wrong. I’m not trying to argue. I want Gateway Church to be an outreach-oriented church, and I think there are certain beliefs that could hinder us from sharing the gospel with everyone.

Some people may think that by giving this message, I’m attacking doctrine. Before I give you the first point of my message, I need to explain the difference between doctrine and dogma. Let me ask you a question: over the years that you’ve grown with the Lord, has your doctrine changed? In other words, you’ve grown as a Christian, and now you believe something you didn’t believe before? We’ve probably all changed our doctrine at some point in our walk with the Lord.

I actually set you up by asking that question using the word doctrine, because by its literal definition, doctrine never changes. The word doctrine comes from two Greek words: didasko (meaning ‘The Master’s teaching’) and didache. So it’s not doctrine that changes; rather, our understanding of doctrine is what changes.

So what we’re talking about is dogma, which means belief. We’re talking about the Master’s teaching, and I’m telling you what I believe about it. Calvinists and Arminians are students of the master, and I’m not a student of each student—I’m a student of the master as well.

There are five points to Calvinism. You use the acronym TULIP.

    1. TOTAL DEPRAVITY

The T in TULIP stands for total depravity. What many believe this means is that we have such a fallen, sinful nature that we can’t choose Christ. Instead, God just zaps us one day, and we get saved.

I disagree with that. I believe our depravity means we all have a sin nature and God still gives us the ability to choose. The title of this entire series is Eternity: Your Choice. I really believe you determine where you spend eternity. God is a just and merciful God who gives every person a chance to accept Jesus Christ.

Our beliefs need to be consistent with the nature and character of God. I believe that God, who loves the world enough
