    Introduction

My purpose in writing this book is to let you know that whatever you think of yourself, regardless of how people see you, your thoughts about you are the truth! Stand in your truth!

I was born in Lake Charles, LA, in 1961 to Catherine Lee Nero. I knew who my father was, but unfortunately, we never have had a relationship. My Mom had seven sisters and one brother, and my grandparents were both a source of constant love and joy in my life.

My Mom had a twin sister who, in my opinion, was extremely challenging at best. As a child growing up and hearing her speak to my mother, I knew something was awfully wrong in the way she treated her. I cannot imagine having someone constantly telling me that I would never amount to anything or have anything. I could clearly see that this was damaging my Mom, my spirit and my self-esteem, so at the age of twelve, I wrote my uncle a letter asking him to talk to his wife and to tell her to stop saying that my mother and I were stupid and we would never amount to anything. Again at the age of fifteen, I wrote another letter with the same contents to him, but nothing was ever done either time.

I believe my Mom had enough, and she also couldn’t handle the memory of an abortion she had about two years before I was born. When I was around ten years old, my Mom turned on me, and from then on, our pleasant memories together became few and far between. Somehow, she could only remember the good times as she got older, not the bad things she actually did and the words she said to me.

The day I was driving out to Houston, TX, in 2013, my Mom came to my house and said she had been speaking with her priest at her church, and he said she owed me an apology. My Mom’s exact words were, I apologize for anything I’ve done to you when you were a child because of my alcoholism. I apologize for having an affair and getting pregnant, but I don’t apologize for having you. I told my Mom I forgave her, but unfortunately, her words of apology did not erase all the memories I had, even though I knew she was very sincere with her apology.

I have always known that God brought me to Houston to heal me. After my Mom passed away in 2017, it took me a year or two to actually go through her things. What impressed me most was the way she used
