    CHAPTER ONE

I woke suddenly from a dark dream and gazed around the moonlit room, checking Glen’s cot was still undisturbed. Beside me, Jamie slept on, lying on his front with his head turned the other way. Laura slept on the spare bed with the covers thrown aside, unashamedly displaying her body to the night.

Moving carefully, I slid my legs from the bed, lifted my weight from the mattress as slowly as I could, and then padded silently across to the cot, where Glen lay on his back, his tiny hands curled into fists level with his face. The temptation to hold him was strong, but I’d risk disrupting his sleep, and if he cried, the others would wake. Instead, I contented myself by watching his slow breathing, counting the seconds before his chest rose once more.

    Sleep well, little one.

He looks exactly as you did at his age.

Startled, I spun around, but the specter of my mother simply smiled, unafraid.

"What are you doing here? I whispered. And how long have you been standing behind me?"

You were so brave out there, in the swamp, she answered. "Your injuries ran so deep, I wept for you." She reached for my arm, but her hand stopped an inch from my skin.

"You’re always watching me, aren’t you?"

You can no more shake me off than you could remove your own hand.

So . . . you saw me and Laura earlier? My cheeks warmed as I remembered the way she’d massaged my bare body and then encouraged Jamie to ejaculate while he watched.

Your friend has healing hands. Don’t you feel better after her ministrations?

I . . . guess so. I rolled my shoulders and then inhaled deeply, ready for the hot knives of my damaged ribs to stab my chest. But thanks to the rapidity of my shifter healing, I remained pain-free.

    You were lucky, sweetheart.

    Thanks, Mom.

I wouldn’t recommend you repeat the incident.

I don’t plan to. Attacking a Lupus had been foolhardy and reckless, but my only thought was for the safety of my friends. I’d been incredibly lucky to have suffered only a few torn muscles, broken bones, and a brief death by drowning.

You have a mother’s instinct to protect, but bear in mind, your baby needs you alive.

I know. I didn’t want Glen to grow up without a mother, as I had.

And your time to conceive a second child grows near, she reminded me.

    Really? I’d almost forgotten.

    Sarcasm, daughter?

"Sorry. I was so busy before the first Sammenføjning, the mating was the last thing on my mind. This time, it’s all I can think about."

It’s a most pleasant event, trust me.

I know, but I can’t help being afraid, especially after I was kidnapped, and then Glen was nearly stolen from me.

You fret about other schemes which might be laid before you?

Yeah, something like that. Bad guys don’t give up easily.

You have many friends who are prepared to sacrifice their lives to protect you.

"But I don’t want any sacrifices! My voice grew loud, and I stopped, staring at the others to make sure I hadn’t woken them. I continued in a whisper, Enough people have died."

    And yet, more will follow.

    God, I hope not.

God is busy with grander schemes, sweetheart. But Gaia will watch over you.

Gaia is the Earth mother, right?

She is mother to us all. Mother and protector.

Maybe she’ll introduce herself next time a Lupus threatens my baby.

How can you be sure she hasn’t already done so? Did she not gift you with courage?

No. I was the one who went nuts and bit a Lupus. Gaia didn’t pump me full of anything.

    As you wish, sweetheart.

Do you want to see him? I nodded to my sleeping baby.

I see him as no-one else can. I am one with him.

So . . . does he already have my memories?

They are part of him, although he will not understand their patterns for many years.

It’s nice though, knowing a part of me will live on inside him.

As I live on inside you, sweetheart.

    I’m glad you’re here, Mom.

As am I, but for now, you ought to rest. Your recovery is not yet complete.

At that exact moment, I yawned. Had she caused that?

If you require my counsel, I will remain close.

Just don’t peek, okay? I’ll be horribly self-conscious if I know you’re watching.

Even though you’ve accepted that I’m part of you and not a distinct entity?

Yeah. I scratched the back of my neck. It’s a bit weird.

    Good night, sweetheart.

Night, Mom. With a final glance at Glen, I turned back to my bed to see Laura’s eyes glittering. Aw, hell.

Not weird at all, she said softly. Standing naked over your baby while chatting to the ghost of your mother.

    She’s not a ghost, I whispered.

Missing for over twenty years? The chances aren’t good.

I sighed. It’s a Progenitor thing, Laura. You wouldn’t understand.

Come here and explain it to me. She patted the bed. Lie with me.

I shook my head. Nope. I’ll probably fall asleep.

And that’s a bad thing because?

If Jamie wakes up and sees that I’ve switched beds, he’ll be hurt.

He’s a big boy. Her eyebrow rose as she delivered the
