About this ebook

Imagine if the Earth was pulled from beneath her feet.

Aurora Silvestre is a unique being on Earth, an extremely rare product of the mating between her father and a female TauCetean.

But her existence comes with a price: The aggressive alien DNA lurking within her genome constantly tries to assume control of her human body—unless she mates with a human male every four days.

The upside of her hybrid nature is superior strength, intelligence, and lightning-fast reactions, which has already proved useful to Detectives of the Quincy Police Department.

However, other forces are coming into play, forces which will have long-term effects on the population of Quincy, MA, and possibly the entire human race.

Reader Advisory: If you are easily offended by the idea of a half-alien woman seducing men and having frequent, messy sex ... this might very well be your kind of thing.

    Chapter One

The news sites were full of happy images next morning. Carlie, the eleven-year-old girl who had gone missing from Quincy two nights ago, had been returned to her family. I read the story with a smile, knowing I’d helped to make it happen. An innocent man had been cleared as a suspect, the person responsible had been caught and best of all, I’d been able to retain my anonymity. Detective Harris had kept his word, crediting ‘an anonymous source’ which had led to the apprehension of the girl’s aunt, caught trying to smuggle her out of the state.

I laid the reader aside and thought about Harris’s request to help with other crimes in the area. I’d gained a good feeling from helping find Carlie. Dad would have been proud. Mom would probably call me ‘over-emotional’ for assisting humans in their ‘petty affairs,’ but she was dozens of light-years away, and removed from most of humanity’s concerns. She was probably right. The stakes in interstellar politics were several million levels above that of a missing child, and yet, I felt a surge of pride at having made even a small difference to someone’s life.

Thursday dawned bright and clear, and with no sign of rain, or even cloud, I resigned myself to a day indoors. Bright sunlight irritated my skin and eyes, a side-effect of my TauCetean heritage. Venturing outside in a thick coat and hat or heavy sunscreen would draw unwanted attention. No, I’d catch up on some reading and maybe the sky would cloud over in the afternoon. Considering I was strong enough to wrestle any human male to the ground, and with an IQ to rival many human professors, being unable to tolerate sunlight often left me feeling inadequate.

I wondered again about my decision to remain low-profile in the human world, when I could easily have enjoyed the limelight as a professional athlete, or excelled in a military career. Two nights ago, a young man had called me Batwoman because I’d apprehended him climbing through a window. It was a career I’d never considered. How would Quincy react to the presence of a female vigilante? I lay back on the sofa, tucking my hands behind my head and smiling at the notion. Creeping through the night, righting wrongs and defending innocent citizens would certainly allow me to retain my anonymity, and give me the opportunity to dispense some much-deserved ass-kicking. But wouldn’t I be treading on the toes of the police? It was their job to mete out justice, after all.

But Detective Harris and his colleagues had been stumped by the disappearance of a young girl. I’d been pivotal in her return. Didn’t that fact make me an essential part of the process? I sighed. Maybe I ought to discuss the vigilante idea with Harris, although I could guess what he’d say. Police always seemed to feel vigilantes were loose cannons, dangerous, unreliable and likely to inspire copycats. No, if I did start down that route, I’d have to keep it to myself.

A sudden crack of splintering wood shattered my musing. I didn’t move, but my senses jumped into overdrive. Stealthy masculine breathing, followed by a grunt of effort told me all I needed to know. Someone was breaking into my house. I glanced at my clock. It was ten in the morning, a time when most people would be at work for the day. The intruder began opening drawers. A knife scraped as it slid out. My unexpected guest was anticipating trouble, then. I smiled. The kind of trouble he was going to find himself in would be unlike anything he’d ever seen before.

He only spent a minute in the kitchen before moving into the living room. To offer myself a little sport, I closed my eyes and feigned sleep. He chuckled the minute he spotted me, reclining on the sofa, dressed in soft, pink pajamas.

What? I like pink, okay? Just because I’m in constant danger of transforming into a bald, leathery alien with a tail like a whip, doesn’t mean I can’t have a soft side.

I didn’t think anyone’d be home, little lady. My lucky day, I guess.

I opened an eye. Lucky? Why’s that?

He was quick to hide his surprise. Lucky because I got you all to myself.

"Hmm. Maybe I’m the lucky one here. Now, if you’d be so kind as to put
