    H ow did the job search go today, Betty? I asked when I entered the den, finding my girlfriend curled up on the couch with a book on her lap.

    Betty looked up and her initial smile immediately faltered. I could tell just from the expression on her face that it had not gone well. Then again, I asked that question everyday for the past month and it always was the same answer.

    I'm sorry, Rick, Betty said softly. She tried to put on a smile, but it just came off as sad instead. It was just another day of rejection. I apply and I apply, and if I'm lucky, I get a rejection letter. Otherwise, it's just silence, like I didn't even put in all that effort to apply.

    It sucked hearing about how poorly Betty's job hunt was going. But it also pissed me off. There were plenty of jobs out there. If only she were better at selling herself. Sometimes it felt like her resume must have been a boring brick wall of text for how much interest it garnered. But I also knew that even though there were supposedly all of these jobs out there, they were notoriously hard to get. There were a lot of people hopping around.

    I couldn't keep from grumbling. I knew it wasn't completely her fault, but I was also tired of how much of a burden this whole thing was on our relationship. This should have been such an exciting time for us. We weren't newlyweds, but I knew we had been moving toward marriage for some time now. That was why I had invited her to move in with me. But almost as soon as the move was complete, she was laid off.
