Reece, 5'8 ½" 165lbs, shows her husband who's boss! Reece felt that Al should get in better shape, but that fell on deaf ears. Our town of 3,000 people had one decent gym and a connected dojo. It was a one-stop shop for people who were serious about fitness and for people who were not quite as serious. Most everyone traveled to a 2nd gym in one of the surrounding, larger cities as well.

Donna, Clarke, and Denise, my wife and children respectively, all took self-defense classes that included grappling, stand-up fighting and self-defense. I got pretty serious about it as did Clarke, but the women also competed and took pride in their work.

Sarie and her family are wealthy, and they rarely talked to us. Maybe it was shyness, but it seemed more like being snobby. Sarie is divorced and has a twenty-one-year-old daughter which is two years older than my son and three years older than my daughter.

In Spring of 2022 we had a grappling contest at the dojo about 15 miles away and our whole family entered and so did Sarie and her daughter, Sera. I held high hopes for my wife and daughter and even if they came up short against the other ladies, I figured they’d at least be impressive and show their improvement.

My wife won her first match on a judge’s decision because it was 2-2. There were 3 rounds, each one being 3 minutes long. Her second match was against Sarie.

My wife made a strong, aggressive set of moves early on, but this seemed to ignite Sarie. Donna was tapped out twice in the final minute of the first round and three times in the 2nd round which ended the match (a 5-point mercy rule). I hated seeing Donna so dejected. Sarie also seemed very unsympathetic. The whole match left a bad taste in my mouth.

To make matters worse, our daughter lost to Sarie’s daughter 3-0. It was not as rough as my wife’s match, but Denise was pretty well dominated. Once again, their family seemed dismissive of us and very snobby. My wife ended the event 1-2, and my daughter was also 1-2. Clark (my son) was 2-2 and I was 1-2. We all learned a lot but we were also disappointed.

Two weeks later, as I was still sort of thinking about the rudeness, our dojo decided to have a similar set of matches to give us more experience. I thought little about this situation until the brackets were posted and details all came out.

There were weight classes of 110, 130, 150, 170, 200 and 200+ and NO separation by gender due to the smaller numbers. My wife and daughter made it under 130 barely, but Clark and I were in the 150 and under class. I’m about 5’6 and he’s about 5’8. And to my horror, I noticed that my 2nd match was against Sarie...and Clark’s
