About this ebook

Jud the Rat and his friends inhabit a series of phonically-based reading fluency books which are graded in terms of difficulty, and are provided with supporting manuals and implementation materials. The books, manuals and materials form part of Dr Charles Potter’s Reading Fluency Programme, which has been developed to improve reading, writing and spelling abilities based on up to date research and literature, while at the same time being entertaining and enjoyed by children.

This book and the other reading fluency books in the series are designed to be used with repetitive paired reading and with sequential working memory training methods. The materials and methods have been successful with a large number of children of different ages and different cultural backgrounds. Results on the programme have been published internationally, and these publications are available free online.

Dr Charles Potter’s Reading Fluency Programme is evidence-based, and online support is provided to users. It is also helpful to talk to the network of people who have used the programme successfully. If you make contact with me by email I can provide you with further information about the programme. I can also provide you with an illustrated manual to enable effective use of this book in developing reading fluency, as well as with additional materials to support your child’s reading, writing, spelling and learning needs.

JUD THE RAT AND SID THE BADGER

Sid the Badger stood on the deck of the ship and looked out towards the shore.

I can see the docks at the port, said Sid the Badger to Jud the Rat.

So can I, said Jud the Rat.

Sid the Badger and Jud the Rat’s ship was getting closer and closer to the shore. Now Sid the Badger and Jud the Rat could see the docks in the port. Now Sid the Badger and Jud the Rat could see other ships tied up at the docks in the port.

Look at that crane lifting cargo off that ship! said Sid the Badger, Can you see that crane, Jud?

Which crane do you mean, Sid? asked Jud the Rat, I can see lots of cranes, and they are all lifting cargo off the ships in the port.

For Jud the Rat could see the cranes on the docks quite clearly. He could see the cranes lifting cargo off the ships tied up at the docks in the port.

That crane, said Sid the Badger, That’s the crane I mean. It is the biggest crane in the port.

And Sid the Badger pointed to the biggest crane on the docks as it lifted cargo off one of the biggest ships in the port.

This is a very busy port, said Jud the Rat.

Yes, it is a very busy port, said Sid the Badger, Very busy indeed.

There must be plenty of work here as the port is so busy, said Jud the Rat.

If there is plenty of work that will be good for us, said Sid the Badger.

Now as you will have guessed from reading the story so far, Jud the Rat and Sid the Badger were very good friends. They were both sailors on the ship which was sailing into port, and as both Sid the Badger and Jud the Rat had been sailors for a number of years, they had sailed into many ports over the years.

Yes, as they had sailed for so many years in the same ship and sailed into so many ports, Sid the Badger and Jud the Rat had
